Super Bowl Champ Doug Williams Will Have His Life Story Turned into a Movie

Doug Williams is someone that is well respected in the NFL. He became the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

His performance in the Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins is something that people will always talk about. Now Williams is expected to the subject of a movie biopic highlighting his football career.

Doug Williams’ path to the NFL

Williams played college football at Grambling State University, where he went on to have a successful career. He played under legendary head coach Eddie Robinson, and he led Grambling State to a 36-7 record during his four years as the starting quarterback. Williams helped his team win three Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships and was named the Black College of the Year twice during his college career.

In 1977 he led the NCAA in multiple categories, including total yards from scrimmage (3,249), passing yards (3,286), touchdown passes (38), and yards per play (8.6). He finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting. Even though he had a lot of success in college, there was only one NFL coach that worked Williams out, and that was Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator Joe Gibbs. Gibbs was impressed with Williams and rated him the best quarterback in the draft.

The Buccaneers took Williams with the 17th pick in the 1978 draft. He became the first African American quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Williams helped lead the Buccaneers to the playoffs in three of the five seasons that he started at quarterback, and the team played in the 1979 NFC Championship game. At the time, he was the only black starting quarterback in the league.

Doug Williams joining the Washington Redskins

After his time in Tampa Bay, Williams joined the United States Football League and played with the Oklahoma Outlaws. He spent two seasons with the Outlaws and showed improvement at the quarterback position during those two seasons. After the league was shut down in 1986, he returned to the NFL and joined the Washington Redskins.

During the 1987 season, in his second year with the Redskins, he led the team to a successful season and a trip to the Super Bowl. There was a lot of talk about Williams being a black quarterback and leading his team to the Super Bowl. The Redskins took on the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl, and he played one of the best games of his career. He passed for 340 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Redskins to victory and make history becoming the first African American quarterback to win a Super Bowl. His performance led him to win the Super Bowl MVP.

A movie about Doug Williams

The producers from Will Pack Productions secured exclusive rights to the life story of Williams. The biopic will feature Williams’ career and his journey to the NFL. The movie will also show how Williams shut all the critics up, saying black quarterbacks couldn’t lead their team to success.

In an article from Deadline, Will Packer talked about the timing of the biopic and how much of an impact the movie will have. “As NFL players today raise their voices around the fight for justice and equality, none stood taller than Doug Williams, who proved once and for all that the notion of an African American being ill equipped to play quarterback was nothing more than a fallacy,” Packer said. “Doug’s inspirational story will positively impact fans of all ages for years to come.” This biopic will educate a lot of people who do not know the story of Doug Williams and should serve as an inspiration to young black athletes.
