Tee Higgins Could Have Been a Star Basketball Player in College but Decided to Pursue an NFL Career

Former Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins will soon have the opportunity to live out his dream. Higgins was drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. The Cincinnati Bengals took him with the 33rd overall pick.

Higgins had a chance to play basketball at a top school in college but decided to pursue a football career, and it worked out for him.

Tee Higgin’s football career at Clemson

In three seasons at Clemson, Higgins established himself as one of the best receivers to come out of the program. He finished his career with 135 receptions for 2,448 yards, and he set a Clemson record for touchdowns with 27. In his finals season, he averaged 19.8 yards per catch and scored 14 touchdowns.

Higgins was a top weapon on offense for Clemson and helped the team win the 2019 National Championship against Alabama. The 6-foot-4 receiver showed his athleticism and skillset the moment he stepped on to campus at Clemson.

Higgins will have a really good quarterback in Cincinnati. The Bengals took LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the draft. Higgins and Burrow will gel well together, and they can be a dominant duo in the NFL for years to come.

Higgins could have played basketball at a top school

In high school, Higgins was a top athlete in football and basketball. According to ESPN, Higgins was ranked the 18th best player in the class of 2017 for basketball. He had offers from top schools such as North Carolina, Michigan, and Louisville, to name a few. He could have been a two-sport athlete at whatever school he decided to go to, but he wanted to focus on football.

In high school, Higgins committed initially to the University of Tennessee but de-committed and decided to go to Clemson. During his high school career, he was named the Boys Basketball Player of the Year and Tennessee, and he was also a finalist for the Mr. Basketball award. He won the Class AAAAA Mr. Football award as a junior and senior.

There have been many athletes who were talented in multiple sports and were faced with a tough decision going into college. Higgins could have had the same success on the court that he did on the gridiron field.

Gearing up for a successful NFL career

Now that Higgins will become an NFL player, you can say he made the right decision in choosing to pursue a football career. Higgins will help out the Bengals’ football a lot, and as he gains experience in the league, he will become a better player.

Now that the Bengals have Higgins, current wide receiver A.J. Green will have a talented receiver to take under his wing. Higgins will learn a lot from Green, and they have the opportunity to become one of the best receivers duos in the league. In the NFL analysis by Lance Zierlein, Higgins was compared to his soon to be teammate Green. “He’s played all three receiver spots and can be moved around to match up against cornerbacks,” Zierlein said on Higgins. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Bengals’ offense will transition now the Andy Dalton is gone. But people should remember the name, Tee Higgins.
