There have been many great dunkers throughout NBA history. From different eras, there has always been a select few who could get up and throw down. During the mid-1980s, the Atlanta Hawks had two of the best dunkers in NBA history on the same team.
Dominique Wilkins and Spud Webb played together on the Hawks for six seasons. Two slam dunk champions on the same team. That’s something you don’t see often.
Dominique Wilkins and Spud Webb teaming up
The dunking duo first played together during the 1985-86 season. It was Webb’s first year in the league and Wilkins’ third year. That season Wilkins led the team in scoring at 30.3 points per game while Webb finished with 7.8 points per game.
Wilkins already established himself as one of the premier players in the league, and Webb was still trying to adjust to the NBA style. The Hawks had some success that season making it to the playoffs and losing to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
There was one game during the season where Webb and Wilkins both went off. It was against the Los Angeles Lakers. The duo took on Magic Johnson and the Lakers and played one of the best games of their careers. Webb finished with 23 points and 13 assists while Wilkins had 33 points and 11 rebounds. Not only could the two, wow the crowd with their dunking capability, they know how to play the game and put their team in good positions to win games.
The Hawks went to the playoffs in five of the six seasons that the duo played together. Even though the team never made it to an NBA Finals with the two, they consistently were a top team in the Eastern Conference.
1986 Slam Dunk Contest
Spud Webb and Dominique Wilkins got a chance to battle it out in the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest. It was only fitting that the two teammates made it to the final round. Wilkins was the reigning dunk champion, and Webb was attempting history as the shortest player to win a dunk contest.
In one of the most exciting dunk contests in NBA history, Webb was able to edge out his teammate and claim the Slam Dunk Contest crown. It was then when the NBA world got a taste of what the Hawks had on their team. Not one high-level dunker, but two.
Wilkins would go on to win another Slam Dunk Contest in 1990 as the two finished with three combined dunk trophies.
A dunking duo in Atlanta
The city of Atlanta had something special in Webb and Wilkins. It only made it better than they were on one of the top teams in the East as well. When you talk about Slam Dunk winners throughout NBA history, you can’t forget about Webb and Wilkins.
Wilkins was the one that when he threw it down, you felt it. Then you had Webb at 5-foot-7 who just got up to the rim with ease, and you could throw it down. Those two players will always be remembered in Atlanta.
