The Detroit Lions are one of the unluckiest teams in the NFL. You have to feel for Dan Campbell and company. They’ve actually tried but can’t seem to catch a break. The team received a crushing injury update about one of its key players. After yet another blow, the Lions are destined for a top-five draft pick in 2022.
The Detroit Lions are still winless
The Detroit Lions are currently sitting at 0-5 in the regular season, matching only the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Detroit’s lackluster start to the 2021 season is not for lack of effort, though. Head coach Dan Campbell won’t allow his guys to give up. His squad has been competitive but lost nail-biters to the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings in the waning minutes.
It’s not surprising to see the Lions struggle in 2021. They have a new head coach and, quite honestly, a severe lack of talent. The fact that they’ve been in some of those games is a testament to the hard work the team put in during the offseason and the impact of Campbell.
Detroit has upcoming matchups against the Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams, and Philadelphia Eagles. It’s unclear when the team’s first win will come.
Although it’s hard to imagine to Lions going 0-16, it’s just as challenging to pinpoint which game they could actually win. Anything is possible, given their bad luck so far.
Center Frank Ragnow is done for the season
The injury bug bit the Detroit Lions hard to start the 2021 season. Jeff Okudah, Romeo Okwara, Tyrell Williams, Taylor Decker, and Quintez Cephus are just a few of the names who ended up on the injured reserve list.
The team suffered another major injury blow when center Frank Ragnow went down in the Lions’ Week 4 loss to the Chicago Bears. The Lions placed the Pro Bowler on the injured reserve list after suffering a toe injury.
According to ESPN, Coach Campbell announced that Ragnow would be undergoing season-ending surgery. That’s devastating news for an already injury-riddled team.
Campbell added that the news crushed his star offensive lineman. “He wants to be a part of this and feels like he’s letting guys down, but it’s just the opposite,” said Campbell.
“You’re being unselfish when you need to be selfish about this because maybe there’s a chance you get him back at the very end of the year, but there’s a bigger chance that, however, it’s not properly healed,” he added.
Shutting Ragnow down for the year is a smart move. As much as the team will miss him, especially Jared Goff, he must get back to 100%. The Lions aren’t contending in 2021 anyway.
The Lions will be competing for the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft
You have to give Detroit Lions fans credit. The franchise hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2016, and they’ve never gone to a Super Bowl. Despite years of turmoil and disappointment, the Lions faithful are still strong.
The mediocrity has trickled over into the 2021 season. Nobody expected Detroit to be a playoff contender, though. That won’t be happening for quite some time.
The Lions are in full rebuilding mode. General manager Brad Holmes has his work cut out for him to turn things around. There may be light at the end of the tunnel, though.
D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams are solid building blocks in the backfield. T.J. Hockenson is slowly climbing the tight end ranks. An offensive line that features Frank Ragnow, Taylor Decker, and Penei Sewell isn’t a half-bad start either.
Even though the Lions are winless, Dan Campbell seems to be a good fit in Detroit. His team will undoubtedly compete for a top-five pick in 2022, and they may have a shot at No. 1 overall.
The Jaguars are in much worse shape with Urban Meyer at the helm, but the race to No. 1 should be fun to watch.
