The Green Bay Packers are receiving a lot of criticism for the team’s performance in the NFL draft. Despite making the NFC Championship Game last season, the Packers seem to be looking more toward the future. They do not seem interested in making the best of their championship window with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. That is pretty similar to what the Chicago Bulls were doing in 1997-98, which is being shown on “The Last Dance”.
Aaron Rodgers did not have many weapons on the Packers in 2019
The Green Bay Packers have one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in Aaron Rodgers. Throughout the years, Rodgers has led the Packers to a lot of success, winning one Super Bowl and going to four NFC Championship Games. The most recent NFC Championship Game they went to was just in 2019 after they went 13-3 in the regular season.
However, they possibly could have went all the way to the Super Bowl had there have been weapons for Rodgers to throw to. Not one player on the Packers gained over 1,000 receiving yards in 2019. Davante Adams was his best receiver, but he missed four games. Other than Adams, no other player had over 500 receiving yards. How is Rodgers supposed to have success as an aging QB without any weapons?
When comparing Rodgers to another aging quarterback in Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints have an abundance of weapons for him. He has the best receiver in football in Michael Thomas, a good tight end in Jared Cook, and a running back who is a threat in the passing game in Alvin Kamara. Why can’t the Packers go all-in with Rodgers like the Saints are with Brees?
Everyone hoped the Packers would address this issue during the NFL draft. Spoiler alert – they didn’t.
Packers looked to the future in the NFL draft
This year’s wide receiver class was the deepest it has been in years. So, the Green Bay Packers had plenty of opportunities to address their lack-of-weapons issue. They did not, though.
Instead, Green Bay selected Rodgers’ replacement in quarterback Jordan Love. They also drafted a running back in AJ Dillon, who did nothing in the passing game at Boston College. Then in the third round, they drafted a solid tight end in Josiah Deguara, but selecting him in the third round was a bit of a reach.
Do you know what position the Green Bay Packers did not select any of? A wide receiver. The Packers sent a clear message to their future Hall of Fame quarterback that they are not looking to help him and are, instead, looking to the future.
The Bulls also turned to the future
The Chicago Bulls were going for their third straight NBA championship in 1997-98. They ended up winning it, proving they were one of the most dominant teams in sports history. The general manager at the time, Jerry Krause, though, had already decided to move on from the players and coach that made them so successful. He said this to reporters during the season, which was ultimately shown “The Last Dance” documentary, “This will be Phil [Jackson]’s last year as the coach of the Bulls. At the conclusion of the year, we’ll look toward the future,” according to CBS Sports.
Phil Jackson then did not coach the Bulls after the 1997-98 season. Michael Jordan also retired after that season while the Bulls ultimately traded Scottie Pippen and released Dennis Rodman in 1999.
Moving on from their championship players did not go well for the Bulls. The Bulls went 96-282 in Krause’s final five seasons with the team, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The Packers seem to be taking bad notes on ‘The Last Dance’
The similarities between what the Green Bay Packers are doing and what the Chicago Bulls did are uncanny.
The Bulls moved on from Hall of Fame players to look toward the future. They could have won another championship but chose not to. The Packers, on the other hand, still have a championship window with future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers. The team is not acting like they want to go all in with him, though, as they are clearly looking toward the future.
Sports fans, as they are watching “The Last Dance,” are very critical right now of what the Bulls did. A lot of sports fans are also very critical of what the Packers are currently doing. We will all eventually cool down over this, but in 20 years, when we have a documentary about Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers will look very similar to how the Chicago Bulls are looking in “The Last Dance” right now. Foolish.
