The LA Lakers will make the playoffs for the first time since 2013, which the San Antonio Spurs swept them in the first round. But this year is a different story and a different team. The Lakers will have the top spot in the west and are a favorite to play for an NBA title.
The last time the Lakers went into the playoffs as the top seed, they came out as NBA champions.
A look at the 2019-20 LA Lakers
The Lakers came into the 2019-20 season as one of the favorites to compete for a title. There were some moves made and new additions to the team. One of the biggest additions was NBA superstar Anthony Davis. This season, the Lakers got off to one of the best starts in franchise history with a 17-2 record. It was evident that the Lakers wanted to establish themselves as one of the best teams in basketball.
With LeBron James and Davis leading the way, the Lakers were doing something people have not seen in several years, and that’s win games. For a while, the Lakers were among the worst teams in the league, and they struggled to find their identity. When James joined the Lakers, there was hope that the team can become a winning team yet again. Now people across the NBA have the Lakers winning the NBA Finals.
Looking at their roster, the Lakers have a deep team. They have the rim protectors in JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard, they have shooters in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Danny Green and two of the best players in the league in James and Davis. That’s not even their entire team, and they have other players that can make an impact on the court. This team has a lot of talent, and if they can continue to play at a high level, it will be a challenge for teams that face them in the playoffs.
The 2009-10 Lakers were the last team to win the championship
The last Lakers’ team to win the title came 10 years ago. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to their second consecutive NBA title beating the Boston Celtics 4-3. The Lakers finished the regular season with a 57-25 record and were the top seed in the Western Conference. During the 2010 playoffs, the Lakers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns en route to the finals.
Bryant was the leader on that team, and there were some key role players on that team like Lamar Odom, Sasha Vujacic, Shannon Brown, and Jordan Farmar. The Lakers had to good big men in Pau Gasol, and Andrew Bynum and Metta World Peace was an important piece to the team as well. Bryant and the Lakers got revenge on the Celtics when they beat them in the 2008 NBA Finals.
These 2019-20 Lakers have a chance to bring a title back to LA
Now this year’s Lakers team can have the opportunity to add another banner to the Staples Center. It won’t be an easy task, but the Lakers have a well-balanced team that will compete at a high level. This year’s team can start a new era that fans have been waiting for a while to witness.
History can repeat itself for the Lakers because the last time they were the No. 1 seed in the west, they came out with a championship. One thing that the 2010 Lakers team had that this year’s team has is a superstar(s). Bryant led that 2010 team the entire season and the role players stepped up, especially in the playoffs. It’s going to be a team effort for the Lakers if they want to win that title this year.
