The last time the Minnesota Timberwolves had the No. 1 draft pick, they took Karl Anthony-Towns during the 2015 NBA draft. Five years later, Minnesota has the top overall pick yet again.

The 2020 NBA draft features some talented players, and the Timberwolves should take Georgia star Anthony Edwards with the first pick.

Edwards spent one year at the University of Georgia and had an impressive freshman season. The 6-foot-5 guard led all freshmen in scoring averaging 19.1 points per game and finished the 2019-20 season with 610 points, ranking No. 7 on Georgia’s single-season scoring list. As soon as Edwards started his freshman season, he immediately became Georgia’s top player.

In his college debut, he scored 24 points and had nine rebounds. Throughout the season, he displayed his scoring abilities. Whether it was shooting from deep or driving to the lane, Edwards found a way to score. He also was not afraid of the big moments, and he wanted the ball in his hands during the final seconds of the game. 

Edwards was one of five finalists for the Jerry West National Shooting Guard of the Year Award. He was also named SEC Freshman of the Year and became the first Georgia player to win the award since its inception in 2001. All Edwards needed was one season to show that he was ready to play in the NBA, and he certainly impressed a lot of people. 

Anthony Edwards is the right fit for Minnesota

The Minnesota Timberwolves is a team filled with talented players. Karl Anthony-Towns and D’Angelo Russell are two players who have made all-star teams. Minnesota has an above-average big man and point guard, two important pieces to a team. With the addition of Anthony Edwards, he can play the wing and add another scoring option to the team. Edwards would not have to work hard to score the ball because with Russell at the point, and he’ll find ways to give him the ball. 

Also, Edwards won’t have the ball in his hands that much like he did at Georgia. He can stand around the perimeter and score that way too. Minnesota doesn’t have a true shooting guard, and Edwards would fit in perfectly. Over the next few years, Minnesota can become a team that competes for a playoff spot with the young players they have, and Edwards can help them get there.

Will Anthony Edwards have a productive NBA career?

Edwards can certainly go on to have a good career in the league. He has the talent and skill set to be a really good player. Once he enters the league, he will need to work on his defensive game and polish his offensive game. Once he does that, he will impact whatever team he plays for a long time.

It makes sense for Minnesota to take Edwards with the No. 1 pick. He has the potential to be the Rookie of the Year. That’s how much talent and potential he has. It’s going to be exciting watching Edwards grow and mature during his NBA career.
