One of the hardest tasks in all of sports is making an NFL roster. While draft picks make it look easy, scores of undrafted free agents get cut every year. As perennial contenders, the Green Bay Packers‘ roster is hard to make. Wide receiver Jake Kumerow tried to do so several times, and he finally succeeded in 2018.
Kumerow’s story is one of perseverance in the face of ridiculous odds. Aside from his great story, he also has a surprising tie to Joey and Nick Bosa.
Jake Kumerow’s path to the Green Bay Packers
Kumerow played college football at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater. After finishing his collegiate career, he went undrafted. The-27-year-old had previously been invited to three different training camps and was cut from all three.
It wasn’t until the 2018 preseason with Green Bay that the veteran of the cutdown process made an impact. Here’s what Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers had to say about Kumerow during the 2019 training camp:
“He’s made a ton of plays, did it all spring and summer and now he’s getting reps with me and making a ton of plays. He’s running the right route all the time and making contested catches and putting the ball away. It’s been pretty impressive for a guy from a small school in Wisconsin.'”
Kumerow was so impressive that he made the team. He’s now in his second season with the Packers.
Jake Kumerow’s 2019 season
After a quiet rookie season with eight catches for 103 yards in five games, Kumerow has had a slightly better 2019 season. While he still has modest results, he’s improving on his 2018 totals. Here are his 2019 numbers so far:
- 10 catches
- 163 receiving yards
- One touchdown
- 16.3 yards per reception
Kumerow shows slight improvement, even if he’s not a big factor in the Green Bay offense. The trick for Kumerow is to do a better job of getting open. The most targets he’s seen in a game this season was four against the Chiefs. If the wide receiver can get more separation between himself and the defensive backs, he’ll likely see more passes thrown his way.
Jake Kumerow’s ties to Joey and Nick Bosa
While Kumerow is still trying to establish himself as a legitimate NFL player, he has a surprising connection to two NFL stars: Nick and Joey Bosa. Chargers.com explains, “There’s another family member of theirs also making his mark in the NFL. Their cousin, Jake Kumerow, plays wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers.”
Here’s how the connection came to be: John Bosa, Nick and Joey’s father, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1987. The next season, the Dolphins selected Eric Kumerow, Jake’s father. Eric and John became great friends, with Eric introducing John to his sister Cheryl. The two eventually married and had sons Nick and Joey.
Two draft picks in back-to-back years created a football legacy. While Nick and Joey may be on a different level than cousin Eric fighting to keep his spot, they can all bond over their family ties and status as NFL players.
