Since Super Bowl 54, one of the underlying focus around the league has been star quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ expected record-breaking extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. There hasn’t been any timetable put forth on when Mahomes will have that next lucrative deal in place. That pending matter also shifts the attention toward other star quarterbacks in similar contract situations with their respective teams. None has stood out more than what Deshaun Watson has with the Houston Texans as he’s nearing the completion of his rookie deal. With that in mind, it puts a great sense of urgency to get that extension done before Mahomes’ massive extension.
Deshaun Watson’s NFL career
Through his first three seasons in the league, Watson has blown past the expectations that the team has placed in front of him.
He has quickly become the face of the franchise while leading them to tremendous success with back-to-back AFC South division titles and playoff appearances behind double-digit win seasons. Watson did experience a torn ACL in his rookie campaign, but he has moved past those injury concerns and put forth consecutive standout season that earned him a pair of Pro Bowl selections.
That has seen him produce at a record-breaking pace with more than 9,000 passing yards and rushing yards in his first 36 career games. Before that, he also joined Cam Newton as the only players to record at least 7,500 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his first 30 career games.
Watson has proven to be one of the league’s best young talents that has shown to be a dual-threat factor. The Texans’ future has become tied to their star quarterback, which has underlined the importance of locking him into a new lucrative extension before he reaches the end of his current deal.
Texans must give Deshaun Watson into new deal
Watson has more than demonstrated that he could be the long-term solution under center for the Texans.
What has pushed the timeline for a new extension for the Clemson product is the looming record-breaking deal that Mahomes will receive from the Chiefs. Houston is already expected to pick up the fifth-year option on Watson’s rookie deal to keep him under contract control for at least another year.
However, it’s the upcoming extension with Mahomes that the Texans must move ahead as that could reset the entire quarterback contract market. The Chiefs are expected to work out a new deal that may be well north of $200 million, which would significantly raise how much it would take to secure a new contract with Watson.
At this point, time is money for the Texans as the longer that this situation persists into the offseason, the closer it will draw to Kansas City hammering out Mahomes’ deal. That’s a luxury that Houston doesn’t have if they hope not to see the asking price skyrocket for their star quarterback. It’s not anything of their doing, but it’s clear that they are running against the clock.
Deshaun Watson holds Texans’ future
The NFL is a league that success is ultimately found through the play of the quarterback.
Since Watson took over as the starter, the Texans have become a constant in the playoffs. The team has had their shortcomings in the postseason, but they are coming off reaching the divisional round for the first time in three years. Watson’s health will be critical in this contract situation, which they have already inked Pro Bowl left tackle Larmey Tunsil to a three-year extension last week.
Houston will need to continue to improve their offensive line to get the most out of their star quarterback. Ultimately, it will be a matter of when and not if with Watson’s contract situation. For the Texans’ sake financially, the emphasis should be on hammering it out sooner than rather than later.
