Tim Tebow Harshly Slammed the Jets Trade For Him
Over the years, Tim Tebow has become one of the most polarizing sports athletes. Much of that came from his time on the football field starting with an impressive collegiate career. However, things didn’t transpire in that manner in the NFL. That included a tough one-year stint with the New York Jets that quickly fell apart. In light of that, Tebow recently took a subtle shot at his former team.
Tim Tebow’s short-lived NFL career
Tebow entered the NFL after putting together one of the most illustrious collegiate careers at the University of Florida.
During his time at Florida, he had become one of the most talked-about sports athletes in the country as he established himself as one of the greatest college players of all-time. However, there were some concerns about whether he could translate that success to the next level.
Tebow was selected with the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, where he spent just two seasons with the franchise. That saw him experience some highs and lows along the way. His success in the 2011 season saw him guide the team to the playoffs after a 1-4 start as he guided the team to a 7-1 record at one point before falling in the final three regular-season games but still clinched the AFC West title with an 8-8 record.
He had a magical moment in the wildcard round with a game-winning touchdown pass in overtime to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the Broncos fell short in convincing fashion in the divisional round to the New England Patriots. Following that campaign, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets, where he spent one dysfunctional campaign with the team.
He signed ahead of the 2013 season by the Patriots but cut before the start of the regular season. Tebow got another shot with the Philadelphia Eagles before the2015 campaign but was released at the end of the preseason.
Tim Tebow blasts the Jets
Throughout his sports career, Tebow has been one of the most polarizing athletes of his time without much negativity coming from his direction.
However, Tebow let that guard down a little over this past weekend as he blasted the Jets. During an Instagram Live post on Easter Sunday, where he discussed his Evangelical faith, the former Heisman Trophy winner about various significant sports trades led him down the path to ridicule New York about his deal back in 2012.
“I got traded to the Jets. How’s that for a trade? That didn’t work out for anybody. When’s the last time a Jets trade worked out? Anyway, that’s beside the point.”
Although it was a bit out of character for Tebow, it does show that he didn’t quite understand being traded to the Jets. At the time of the move, New York already had Mark Sanchez under center as it made for a partial quarterback competition.
The deal made complete sense for the Broncos as it freed up the spot for Peyton Manning. However, the Jets had no sense of direction with their quarterback situation as then-head coach Rex Ryan wanted to utilize Tebow in unique packages such as the wildcat formation.
Keep in mind; the Jets had shortly before that move decided to ink Sanchez to a three-year extension that included $20 million guaranteed. The entire situation was mishandled in Tebow’s one campaign with the team as he was a season full of disappointment and dysfunction.
Tim Tebow’s second career
Although Tebow’s NFL career didn’t blossom into anything special, he has had another opportunity to pursue a baseball career.
He has continued to work his way through the New York Mets’ minor-league system. Tebow has had struggles with injury and consistent along the way, which has brought forth questions whether he can become a major-league player.
The 32-year-old has also dabbled a bit into the sports broadcasting industry over the years as he was hired by ESPN back in 2013 as a college football analyst and signed a multi-year extension in 2017. He has appeared primarily on the SEC Network as a co-host of SEC Nation.
