Boston sports fans in the 2000s enjoyed Tom Brady and Kevin Youkilis bringing several championships to Beantown.
Brady, the New England Patriots’ longtime starting quarterback, is far more known and is among the greatest players in NFL history. But don’t forget about Youkilis, an All-Star corner infielder who spent most of his career with the Boston Red Sox.
Brady is still going strong in the NFL, although he now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As for Youkilis, Brady’s brother-in-law, he has a new job in Brady’s old town.
Kevin Youkilis is now doing TV work for the Boston Red Sox
For the Boston fans who want to quickly forget about a Patriots season without Tom Brady, you’re in luck.
The Boston Red Sox begin their season on April 1 against the Baltimore Orioles. NESN, the team’s TV network, recently announced its complete studio and game broadcast staff.
Four prominent ex-Red Sox players are joining NESN this year. Older fans will remember Ellis Burks, an outfielder who had two stints with the Red Sox, and Mo Vaughn, a three-time All-Star and the 1995 AL MVP winner.
Those of a younger age will recognize the other two names. Former Red Sox corner infielder Kevin Youkilis and closer Jonathan Papelbon, two crucial players on the 2007 team that won the World Series, have also joined NESN.
Burks will work as a studio analyst and occasional color commentator. The other three will be weekly studio analysts.
Youkilis and Tom Brady are related by marriage
It only seems fitting that two of the most beloved Boston athletes in recent memory are related by marriage.
Kevin Youkilis married Julie Brady, Tom’s sister, in April 2012. Youkilis had a previous relationship with Enza Sambataro, the CEO of his charity, before the two split up in 2010.
The Red Sox traded Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox only months after he married Brady’s sister, but not out of punishment. The Red Sox were amid a down year, and Youkilis was set to hit free agency.
Youkilis and Brady — Julie, not Tom — had two sons together as of 2019, as well as a stepdaughter.
Kevin Youkilis had a lucrative and successful MLB career
There was a stretch in the late 2000s and early 2010s where Kevin Youkilis was among the best first baseman in baseball.
Youkilis debuted with the Red Sox in 2004 and took over as the team’s full-time first baseman starting in 2006, his age-27 season. From 2006-2011, Youkilis hit .292 with 121 home runs, 506 RBIs, 214 doubles, and had an excellent .392 on-base percentage.
Youkilis earned All-Star honors three times and placed third in the AL MVP voting after the 2008 season. The powerful first baseman hit .306 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 29 career playoff games from 2004-09.
According to Baseball-Reference, Youkilis earned over $56 million in the majors. Since retiring after an injury-plagued 2013 season with Mariano Rivera and the rival Yankees, Youkilis now owns Loma Brewing Company, a California-based brewery.
