Top 5 NFL Quarterback Beer Chugs: Where Does Baker Mayfield’s Rank?

Quarterback Baker Mayfield #6 of the Cleveland Browns

Last year, Baker Mayfield impressed Cleveland fans on the field with his outstanding play as a rookie. In 14 starts, Mayfield led the Browns to a respectable 7-7 record and passed for 3,725 yards with 27 touchdown passes and only 14 interceptions. Cleveland is favored to win the AFC North this season.

But it turns out that Mayfield can impress Cleveland fans off of the field, too. The Browns quarterback chugged a beer in impressive fashion on Saturday night at a Cleveland Indians game to get the hometown fans fired up. Quarterbacks chugging beers has been all of the rage in recent months; so where does Mayfield’s chug rank among the others?

Dishonorable Mention: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers, May 23

The quarterback chugging war began in large part due to the sad state of affairs that was Aaron Rodgers trying to chug a beer at a Milwaukee Bucks playoff game. Packers offensive lineman David Bakhtiari cleanly chugged two beers during a stoppage in play to get Bucks fans on their feet before pointing the camera in the direction of Aaron Rodgers. The sight of Green Bay’s franchise quarterback sent the building into a frenzy.

Sadly, their energy was met with a pitiful beer chug attempt. Rodgers politely picked up his beer, which was already half empty, and began to sip it in a painfully slow manner. Before finishing it, he stopped sipping, shaking his head in defeat. David Bakhtiari chugged a third beer to finish the segment on a high note, but this was a moment that Aaron Rodgers fans and haters alike wouldn’t soon forget.

5. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs, June 1

What can’t Patrick Mahomes do? The 23-year-old won the NFL MVP Award last season with 50 touchdown passes, 5,097 passing yards and a passer rating of 113.8 in 2018. He also knew what to do when he was put front-and-center on the jumbotron at a St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup Final game, chugging the rest of his beer to thunderous applause.

4. Mitch Trubisky, Chicago Bears, May 31

Mitch Trubisky had a breakout season in 2018, shaking off claims that he was a draft bust. Trubisky passed for 3,223 yards and rushed for 421 more, suggesting that he could still develop into an effective dual-threat quarterback in the NFL. While Trubisky’s NFL game still needs work, his chugging game doesn’t; the 24-year-old effortlessly threw back his beer at a Chicago White Sox game in May.

3. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions, May 23

Matthew Stafford was the first quarterback to respond to Aaron Rodgers failed beer chug. Moments after Rodgers embarrassed himself in Milwaukee, Stafford took a break from his nice dinner to casually chug all of the beer in his tall pilsner glass. Style points for making it look so easy right after Rodgers had made it look so difficult, giving quarterbacks around the NFL back some much-need street cred.

2. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns, August 3

Speaking of style points, Mayfield takes the cake with his performance at the Indians game. When he’s put up on the big screen, he calls for a fresh beer, bites a hole in it with his teeth, and then shotguns the whole thing down without spilling a drop. Mayfield then turns around and points to his Francisco Lindor jersey, rallying the home crowd with this impressive display.

1. Tom Brady, New England Patriots, June 6

This June, Tom Brady and the Patriots came together for a ring ceremony to celebrate their victory in Super Bowl LIII. Brady, a 41-year-old health nut, chugged an entire beer out of a goblet in roughly two gulps. He defeated David Andrews, his 6’3” 300-pound center, in the process.

When it comes to competitions, it’s probably best not to challenge Tom Brady.
