Following the Kansas City Chiefs‘ first Super Bowl win in 50 years, the next item on their list has remained on working out a new long-term deal with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The reigning Super Bowl MVP‘s current contract is heading into the final year of his rookie deal, which could set the table for an expected record-breaking extension. With that in mind, star tight end Travis Kelce recently took a shot at how much he believes his teammate will make on his next massive deal with Kansas City.
Patrick Mahomes primed for a massive payday
Through his first three seasons in the league, Mahomes has gotten off to a historic start.
He has quickly established himself as arguably not only the best quarterback but potentially the best player in the NFL heading into the 2020 season. Mahomes has already reached the mountaintop, earning his first Super Bowl win that has made him the youngest player to secure an regular-season MVP award and Super Bowl MVP honors before age 25.
It has been a smooth ride to the top for the star quarterback that has put him in prime position to earn a record-breaking deal in his next contract with the Chiefs. There have been many to chime in on the situation that believes he will be the first NFL player to garner a $200 million deal with more than $40 million annually.
That has put more scrutiny on the upcoming discussions that the Chiefs will have with Mahomes as he has more than put himself in the position to be the highest-paid player in NFL history. With that in mind, one of his current teammates has offered his two cents on what he thinks he will make on that massive deal.
Travis Kelce’s lofty prediction for Patrick Mahomes’ next deal
At this point, it’s quite tricky to pin down how much Mahomes will earn in his next deal with the Chiefs.
The only assumption is that he will be paid in record-breaking fashion to secure his long-term future with the franchise. During an interview on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday morning, Kelce took a stab at guessing how much Mahomes will make as he believes it will be $50 million per season.
“I think he’s going 50 a year. I think he’s going to make $50 million per year on the field — worth every penny of it.”
That number would completely shatter the current highest annual amount that is sitting at $35 million with Russell Wilson’s four-year, $140 million extension that he signed with the Seattle Seahawks. It’s an insane amount of money that would mark the most paid for any player in the professional sports leagues in North America per year.
The remarkable part is that it’s not out of the realm of possibility as Mahomes has put himself in this extremely promising spot. Only time will tell what will transpire, but it’s clear that Kelce envisions a gigantic historic payday ahead of his teammate.
What will Patrick Mahomes receive?
The ball is in the Chiefs’ court to get things rolling in the right direction toward working out a long-term extension with Mahomes.
There isn’t a timetable for the franchise to engage in contract discussions with their star quarterback, but it’s clear that both sides have a keen mutual interest. Mahomes voiced before Super Bowl 54 that he wants to remain with the franchise for his entire career.
He also voiced that he wanted to hammer out a deal that worked well for both sides. In other words, he doesn’t want his next contract to financially prevent the Chiefs from adding or retaining premier talent on the roster.
All of that should make the contract talks interesting to see on what end of the spectrum things all unfold. Beyond that, it’s only a matter of time before Mahomes gets the massive payday he deserves.
