UFC: Why Jorge Masvidal Won’t Fight Conor McGregor Anytime Soon

Jorge Masvidal is on a hot streak right now, and he’s set to fight Nate Diaz for the inaugural BMF Belt at UFC 244 on Nov. 2, 2019. However, before UFC booked that fight, there was a lot of talk about Masvidal fighting Conor McGregor. However, that fight never came to be. Here’s why.

The modern Jorge Masvidal

For many years, Jorge Masvidal competed in the UFC in the lightweight division, but he rarely had much success. He won fights, but often not convincingly, and when he faced better opponents, he rarely beat them. Eventually, like Nate Diaz, he got fed up with cutting weight, and he decided to move up and compete in the welterweight division.

Masvidal found a lot of success in that division, including knocking out skilled opponents like Donald Cerrone. However, once again, when Masvidal had his big tests, he failed them.

First, he fought and lost to Demian Maia, and then he fought and lost to Stephen Thompson. Both men were title contenders, so by losing to them, Masvidal blew his shot at fighting for the belt. As a result of that, he took a break from MMA and competed in a reality TV show. After that, though, he returned to the sport in spectacular fashion and blessed the world with two stunning knockouts.

His latest knockout, which, at five seconds, is the fastest knockout in UFC history, propelled him into stardom. How big of a star he really is will be tested at UFC 244, but he’s already far more popular than he’s ever been. His late-blooming is one of the big reasons why he hasn’t faced McGregor yet.

Like Jorge Masvidal, Conor McGregor competed in a lighter weight class before moving up and competing at heavier weights. Unlike Masvidal, McGregor found his footing early and became a notorious fighter. With knockout after knockout, McGregor steadily became the biggest name in the UFC.

While Masvidal was working his way up the welterweight ranks, McGregor was dominating Eddie Alvarez and becoming the first two-weight champion.

When Masvidal lost his chance for a title, McGregor was out earning millions of dollars fighting Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. When Masvidal was competing in a reality TV show, McGregor was trying to reclaim his belt against Khabib Nurmagomedov

Since his loss to Nurmagomedov, however, McGregor has yet to fight again, inside the octagon, at least. However, that hiatus from the sport was exactly when Masvidal started making a name for himself. But that isn’t the main reason why McGregor hasn’t fought Masvidal yet.

Why Jorge Masvidal doesn’t want to fight Conor McGregor

Jorge Masvidal doesn't want to fight Conor McGregor in a UFC bout because he's afraid of what he might do to McGregor.

According to CBS, Masvidal says that he’s too much of a man for McGregor. Masvidal said that he’d kill McGregor in the ring, and that’s why the fight can’t happen. Of course, that’s an exaggeration for trash talking purposes, but there’s some truth to it.

McGregor is a tough man, but he’s competed in the 145- and 155-pound divisions for the entirety of his career. He fought Diaz at 170, but McGregor was still much smaller than Diaz. Masvidal has experience at 155 and 170, and like Diaz, he’d have a good size advantage against McGregor.

McGregor beat Diaz in their rematch, so Masvidal’s size advantage probably wouldn’t mean much against McGregor. Instead, it’s likely that Masvidal is just saying that he won’t fight McGregor to make McGregor angry, which did work.
A fight between the two men would make millions for both of them, so of course Jorge Masvidal wants to make that fight happen. But Conor McGregor has his sights on the title, as he’s stated repeatedly that he wants a rematch against Nurmagomedov. Whether or not Masvidal’s bait will work remains to be seen, but for now, the two men won’t be fighting each other.
