Arsenal are reportedly considering the idea of expanding their stadium to close the gap on their Premier League rivals and we used our AI Supercomputer to see what the Emirates could look like after an expansion. The Emirates Stadium has been the home of Arsenal since 2006 after moving from Highbury and it currently has a capacity of 60,704. However, the Gunners are said to be looking into a possible expansion as they look to ‘compete’ with the match day revenue of their Premier League rivals – especially Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs reportedly earn around £6 million during every match which comes from a variety of factors, but 1/6 comes through the food and drink. In April 2019, Spurs had their first competitive match at their stadium after switching from White Hart Lane to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Lilywhites now have a superior stadium than Arsenal in almost every aspect, holding a larger capacity, generating higher revenue and having more catering/corporate options. Arsenal believe that they cannot compete with their fierce rivals in terms of revenue unless they renovate and add further income opportunities. Manchester United are also looking into the possibility of updating their stadium, as INEOS continues to put their stamp after recently acquiring a percentage in the club. In 2018, Arsenal increased their capacity by 780 which was the last major change at the Emirates and the club are looking into ways on how they can make a fresh expansion ‘cost effective’. One way that has been rumoured is changing the roof of the stadium, which would take major investment but could be less than a major change to seating or size of a stand. With that in mind, we used our AI Supercomputer to generate images of what the Emirates could look like if Arsenal committed to a change in the roof or found another way.
