Manchester United are reportedly keen on re-signing former academy star Angel Gomes next summer – with the England midfielder out of contract. Gomes, 24, came through the ranks at Old Trafford but has spent the past four seasons with Lille in the French top flight. New United boss Ruben Amorim is said to be a ‘long-term admirer’ of Gomes, who became United’s fourth-youngest player of all time when he made his debut in 2017. Midfielder Gomes joined United at age six, but struggled to break into the first team. He was released in 2020, and joined Lille on a five-year deal. Since then, he has found his form and was called up to the England senior squad in August. Making his debut against the Republic of Ireland, Gomes now has four caps for the Three Lions. With his contract up in the summer, no new deal has been agreed with Lille. As a result, a number of top clubs have expressed their interest. Angel Gomes Could Make Man United Return According to a report by The Sun, Man United are looking to bring Angel Gomes back to Old Trafford. As well as Ruben Amorim, the report claims that both sporting and technical directors, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox, are also keen on signing Gomes. Lille know they will likely lose Gomes in the summer, and he will be able to speak to other clubs from January. And Gomes, who grew up in Salford, has a strong connection to the club he spent his youth at. Speaking recently, he said: “There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot. “So of course it’d be difficult to say no.” And in 2022, he openly discussed his desire to one day return to United. He told L’Equipe: “Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home. “I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future.’ Gomes is seen by United as a potential replacement for the 32-year-old Casemiro. At 24, he could be a long-term option and somebody that will help United develop under Ruben Amorim. And with no transfer fee required, he is also a low-risk signing that could be sold on for profit if things don’t work out.
