{"id":19339,"date":"2024-11-19T12:03:47","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T12:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/?p=19339"},"modified":"2024-11-19T12:03:47","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T12:03:47","slug":"former-boxing-champion-barry-mcguigan-opens-up-about-daughters-death-on-im-a-celebrity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/former-boxing-champion-barry-mcguigan-opens-up-about-daughters-death-on-im-a-celebrity\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Boxing Champion Barry McGuigan Opens Up About Daughter&#8217;s Death On I&#8217;m A Celebrity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Barry McGuigan broke down in tears on I&#8217;m A Celebrity on Monday night as he opened up to campmates about his daughter&#8217;s tragic death.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Irish former WBA featherweight champion explained his daughter, Danika, passed away in 2019 aged 33, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing the loss with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/im-a-celebrity-get-me-out-of-here-2024-ages\/\">I&#8217;m A Celebrity<\/a> campmates, McGuigan spoke of how his life has changed.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he goes to church, he replied:\u00a0\u201cI used to go to church a lot but after my daughter\u2026 you know, not so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGuigan then explained what happened to his daughter. At 11-years-old, Danika was diagnosed with acute\u00a0lymphoid leukemia.<\/p>\n<p>Barry said:\u00a0\u201cShe had leukaemia, when I was making the boxing with Daniel Day Lewis, three weeks from the end I had to leave because she\u2019d been diagnosed with leukaemia, they thought she wasn&#8217;t going to get better but she fought back and she won it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She had two years of chemo. She was good, she came back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Visibly upset, McGuigan&#8217;s campmates attempted to comfort him.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Barry thanked them for their kindness, adding:\u00a0&#8220;Thank you, you\u2019re all so lovely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later on, McGuigan explained to Loose Women&#8217;s Jane Moore and Danny that Danika then had bowel cancer as an adult.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking down in tears, he said:\u00a0&#8220;Stage four bowel cancer, five weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Five weeks and she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barry and wife Sandra also have three sons,\u00a0Shane, Jake and Blane.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>Belfast Live<\/em> in 2021, McGuigan said:\u00a0&#8220;I lost my daughter two years ago, and it\u2019s been shocking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ll never recover from it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My life will go on, but I\u2019ll never be the same because family means everything to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Barry Opens Up About Loss of His Daughter | I&#039;m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! 2024\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EFCtPm1F9WY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Barry McGuigan&#8217;s Boxing Career<\/h2>\n<p>Nicknamed &#8216;The Clones Cyclone&#8217;, Barry McGuigan held the WBA and lineal featherweight titles from 1985 to 1986.<\/p>\n<p>From 1983 to 1985, he held the British and Earopean featherweight titles.<\/p>\n<p>McGuigan was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/gary-lineker-to-step-down-from-match-of-the-day\/\">BBC<\/a> Sports Personality of the Year in 1985, and inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>As a bantamweight, he won gold for Northern Ireland at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>He also competed at the 1980 Olympics, making the round-of-16.<\/p>\n<p>In professional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/jake-paul-next-fight\/\">boxing<\/a>, Barry McGuigan recorded 32 wins and three losses in 35 fights, including 28 knockout victories.<\/p>\n<p>His last professional bout was on 31 May, 1989 against Jim McDonnell in Manchester.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barry McGuigan broke down in tears on I&#8217;m A Celebrity on Monday night as he opened up to campmates about his daughter&#8217;s tragic death.
