WEIGH ANCHOR

At first glance this horse racing name might seem innocent. However, say it quickly and a few times over and you’ll get the picture.

This funny horse racing name has actually been allowed TWICE in recent times – the first in 1991, and more recently in 2020 with a filly trained by former Grand National-winning handler Donald McCain.

2. MARY HINGE

Full marks to the owners here, who simply swapped the first two letters of each word around here to get this one by the BHA officials.

In fact, this is also another funny horse name that has been allowed twice.

First in 1991, when Julie Cecil, the wife of the great Sir Henry Cecil, trained this mare to win five of her 11 career starts between 1993 and 94.

Her highlight win came in the Listed Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock in 1994 – a race that is still going strong today at the Lancashire track.

She was also ridden in all her races by jockey Paul Eddery – brother to former champion Pat.

The ‘Mary Hinge’ name also slipped through in South Africa in 2007,

3. BIG TITS

Yes, you are probably thinking – how on earth did the officials not clock onto this one?

However, the reason being that Big Tits was a French horse that was allowed to be named this way – why? Who knows.

But this Lost World mare, who was trained by Elie Lellouche, ran three times in 2003 before retiring, while unfortunately she never won a race.

Maybe she was being weighed down?

4. GEESPOT

Another that you might have thought would have been pulled. But this funny horse racing name may have been helped by its clever link with her breeding.

Her sire was a horse called ‘Pursuit Of Love’ and her dam was called ‘My Discovery’ – very good, hey?

Trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis she ran a 33 massive times in the UK between 2001 and 2004, but won just the twice – maybe she just got a little bit overexcited in her races.

5. THE WIFE DOESN’T KNOW & MY WIFE KNOWS EVERYTHING

Only in America can this happen – right?

Back in 2010 at the US track Monmouth the race caller had a field day with two horses in the race called – The Wife Doesn’t Know and My Wife Knows Everything.

Of course, the two also battled out the finish which led to an hilarious bit of horse racing commentary – listen for yourself here.

6. PASSING WIND

This New Zealand-bred horse doesn’t exactly what it says on the tin and raced in the UK for the former Grand National-winning jockey Richard Guest.

Passing Wind raced solely over the jumps – running 19 times in total and winning twice, with these victories coming at Bangor and Fakenham.

With a name like that – you had to feel sorry for the horses running behind him those days.

7. TWO IN THE PINK

Now, I’m not going to explain this one – either you know, or you don’t.

And if you don’t cover your eyes and type it into Google.

The great news for the owners here, is that the BHA guys were also innocent to its real meaning and so this Ralph J Smith runner managed to race a massive 46 times to the commentator’s delight.

She won three of those races between 2012 and 2017, with most of her outings coming on the All Weather tracks in the UK.

8. AARRRRR

Now this is a classic – not only based on the strange name but how much the US commentator got into calling this one home at Saratoga back in 2008 (see below).

The horse, which maybe was owned by a set of pirates, ran 33 times between 2007 and 2010.

Aarrrrr won three times and was trained by Michael W. Salaggio Jr.

9. ONE OFF THE RAIL

The older horse racing fans might remember this one, who was in action back in the 1990’s.

Trained by Gary Moore – the father of top jockey Ryan – this horse was named by Ken Higson in order to try and stump the commentators and confuse listeners when calling the horse in a race.

He ran 52 times in total – winning 10 times – and was a regular on the AW tracks like Lingfield, where 8 of his 10 career wins came.

10. HOOF HEARTED

We end with another piece of commentary gold – just listen for yourself below.

This cleverly named US horse ran 65 times during the 1980’s for trainer George Cummins. Winning 9 times and scooping $40,345 in total prize money.

While, more recently a horse with the same name popped up in South Africa. Running 10 times between 2003 and 2004.

However, he never managed to ‘blow-off’ in the winners’ enclosure.

The Horse Racing Names That Got Rejected By The BHA

In addition to the many funny horse racing names that have avoided the scrutiny of the officials are also a whole host that where busted.

See below just a selection of horse racing names that the authorities around the globe cottoned on to.

1.
