Drogheda United have publicly distanced themselves from UFC star Conor McGregor following a social media post involving the FAI Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The League of Ireland club secured the trophy after defeating Derry City 2-0 in November\u2019s final.<\/p>\n

McGregor\u2019s cousin, Warren Davis, is a member of the Drogheda squad and had the opportunity to celebrate with the cup.<\/p>\n

The trophy\u2019s journey into McGregor\u2019s hands led to a viral moment\u2014but not without controversy.<\/p>\n

McGregor\u2019s Social Media Misstep<\/h3>\n

On Tuesday, McGregor<\/a> posted an image of himself holding the FAI Cup with an initial caption incorrectly congratulating his cousin Warren for winning the trophy with Dundalk FC, Drogheda\u2019s fierce local rivals.<\/p>\n

He later amended the post to correctly reference Drogheda United, but not before sparking backlash.<\/p>\n

In a further edit, McGregor shifted focus to the possibility of purchasing a League of Ireland team, writing, “How much is it to buy a league of Ireland team I might buy two?”<\/em><\/p>\n

Drogheda United\u2019s Response<\/h3>\n

Following McGregor\u2019s posts, Drogheda United issued a firm statement to clarify their stance and dissociate the club from the UFC<\/a> fighter.<\/p>\n

The statement<\/a>, posted on their official website, read, \u201cThose pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.\u201d<\/p>\n
