Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has been named head coach until the end of the season after former boss Philippe Clement departed the Glasgow side.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ferguson played more than 400 times for Rangers<\/a> across two spells at Ibrox. He earned 45 caps for Scotland from 1998-2009, before retiring as a player in 2015.<\/p>\n

Since moving into coaching he has worked with English side Blackpool, who he also played for. Most recently, he was the manager of Alloa Athletic from 2021-2022.<\/p>\n

Joining Ferguson in the dugout will be Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor.<\/p>\n

The new-look coaching group will take charge of their first match on Wednesday night, with Rangers visiting Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.<\/p>\n

Assistant manager Issame Charai took Monday’s training session and will remain with the club.<\/p>\n

But Philippe Clement’s departure<\/a> has also seen coaches\u00a0Alex Rae, Colin Stewart and Stephan van der Heyden leave the club.<\/p>\n

Clement’s final game in charge was Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren, which left Rangers now 13 points adrift of rivals Celtic<\/a> in the Scottish Premiership title race.<\/p>\n

Barry Ferguson’s Rangers Return A Temporary One<\/h2>\n

Following the confirmation of Ferguson’s appointment as caretaker manager, the club confirmed a permanent boss will be appointed ‘in the coming months’.<\/p>\n

Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart admitted: “The issues we are facing run deeper than the manager”.<\/p>\n

Discussing Clement’s departure, he said:\u00a0“When I spoke to RangersTV last week, I was clear that everyone is judged on results and nobody will get unlimited time in any role at the club.<\/p>\n

“Ultimately, the team’s response following their early exit from the Scottish Cup was a cause for deep concern, leading the board to conclude that action had to be taken now.”<\/p>\n

Stewart wished Clement well in his future roles, describing the Frenchman as ‘a fine man’.<\/p>\n
