Despite being run in Liverpool, England – the Aintree Grand National hasn’t seen an English-trained winning horse for 10 years – with the last coming back in 2015.

But just who is the horse in question, and can the British stables break this long losing spell in 2025?

The Last English-Trained Grand National Winner Was Many Clouds In 2015

You have to go back to 2015 to find the last English-trained Grand National winner – which was Oliver Sherwood’s MANY CLOUDS.

Aged 8 at the time, Many Clouds was sent off as the second top-weight behind the 2014 Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere. He was rated 160 in 2015, which saw him carry 11st 9lbs to victory.

This was the most weight a Grand National winner had lumped to victory since Red Rum won with 12st back in 1974.

Many Clouds Provided Trevor Hemmings With A Third Grand National Win

Many Clouds was also giving owner Trevor Hemmings his third Grand National win after winning the famous steeplechase with Hedgehunter (2005) and Ballabriggs (2011).

His win also gave jockey Leighton Aspell a remarkable second win in the race. Having won the top prize only 12 months before on Pineau De Re.

However, the 2015 Many Clouds Grand National also remains the last time an English-trained winner stepped into the winners’ enclosure – with Irish and Scottish winners dominating since.

The 2015 race actually saw English-trained horses fill the first seven places. But since then they’ve been on a National drought.

The Many Clouds National will also be remembered for being the last ride in the race for former champion jockey AP McCoy, who finished fifth on Shutthefrontdoor as the 6/1 favourite with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK.

Many Clouds went into run 16th in the 2016 Grand National off a 5lb higher mark. Plus won twice more in his career, but sadly collapsed and died after his final win in the 2017 Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham.

In total he raced 27 times, winning 12 of those and amassed £928,000 in total prize money.
