we look at just how many favourites have won the Grand National since the race was first run in 1839.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Many Favourites Have Won The Grand National &#8211; EVER?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first ever running of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/2025-aintree-grand-national-festival-race-schedule-tv-channels-and-date\/\">Grand National<\/a> in 1839 was won by the favourite &#8211; the aptly-named Lottery &#8211; and since then we&#8217;ve seen 29 more winning market leaders.<\/p>\n<p>But, in more recent times, since 1990 we&#8217;ve had <strong>EIGHT winning Grand National favourites<\/strong> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/betting-sites\/horse-racing\/\">the best horse racing betting sites<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meaning over this period the return on backing the horse at the top of the market has yielded a 24% return &#8211; and since the race was first run in 1839 there&#8217;s never been three-in-a-row.<\/p>\n<p>Corach Rambler won the race in 2023 as the 8\/1 favourite and last year in 2024 I Am Maximus inflicted more misery on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/betting-sites\/\">the best betting sites<\/a> &#8211; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Has Been The Shortest-Priced Grand National Favourite?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 1862 a horse called The Huntsman won the race as the 3\/1 favourite and he held the record as the shorted-priced winner for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>This was until <strong>Poethlyn<\/strong> won in 1919 at <strong>11\/4<\/strong>, which was the first race back after World War 1.<\/p>\n<p>This horse also carried a mega-burden of 12st 7lbs that year and remains the shortest price Grand National winner.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Most Popular Grand National Favourites Odds In Recent Times Are 7\/1<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If the 2025 Grand National sees a 7\/1 favourite in the race &#8211; then we should all take note.<\/p>\n<p>This is because, for some reason, this price has been a very popular one since 1982.<\/p>\n<p>SIX of the last nine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/which-horse-is-favourite-to-win-the-grand-national-2025\/\">Grand National favourites<\/a> returned 7\/1.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Red Rum Won Just Once As The Grand National Favourite<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most famous Grand National horse of the lot is <strong>Red Rum<\/strong> &#8211; who landed the race three times between 1973 and 1977.<\/p>\n<p>He is one of just five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/how-many-back-to-back-grand-national-winners\/\">Grand National &#8216;back-to-back&#8217; which horses (or horses) are most likely to go off favourite?<\/p>\n<p>At stage, it&#8217;s looking another tight betting heat so a lot can change between now and the race on Saturday 5th April.<\/p>\n<p>However, last year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/how-many-irish-national-winners-have-won-the-grand-national\/\">Irish Grand National<\/a> winner <strong>Intense Raffles<\/strong> is one of those at the head of the market as he looks to emulate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/which-horse-won-last-years-grand-national-2024\/\">last year&#8217;s winner<\/a> I Am Maximus and take both races.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Am Maximus<\/strong> for trainer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/how-many-times-has-willie-mullins-won-the-grand-national\/\">Willie Mullins<\/a>, is also sure to be popular &#8211; especially as soon as the<em> &#8216;once-a-year&#8217;<\/em> punters remember his name from last year.<\/p>\n<p>While another JP McManus-owned horse called <strong>Iroko<\/strong> has been supported.
