The Blues thoroughly outclassed the Blaugrana in the first leg at Stamford Bridge. Gianfranco Zola landed the first blow at Stamford Bridge in the 30th minute, sending home fans into pandemonium. Four minutes later, Tore Andre Flo scored Chelsea’s second, giving them firm control of the game. Flo seemingly secured Chelsea’s semi-final berth with another finely taken goal in the 38th minute, but Luis Figo’s 64th-minute strike denied the Blues a clean sheet.

At Nou Camp, Rivaldo (24′) and Luis Figo (45′) scored to pull Barca back into the contest, but Flo’s 60-minute strike put Chelsea back ahead. In the 83rd minute, Dani Garcia scored for Barcelona, pushing the game to extra time. Chelsea’s Celestine Babayaro conceded a penalty and saw a red card in the 98th minute. Rivaldo took the spot kick and fired Barca into the lead. Finally, in the 104th minute, Patrick Kluivert scored for the Blaugrana, sealing a 5-1 win on the night and 6-4 on aggregate.

Monaco 3-1 Real Madrid: 2003-04 UCL Quarter-Finals

Monaco Beat Real Madrid’s Galacticos 3-1

The most successful team in Champions League history, Real Madrid, cruised to a 4-2 victory in the first leg of their quarter-final clash with Monaco in March 2004. Sebastien Squillaci’s 43rd-minute strike did unnerve the Santiago Bernabeu, but Los Blancos, with their Galacticos, quickly mounted a comeback. Ivan Helguera equalised for Real Madrid in the 51st minute before world-class trio Zinedine Zidane (70′), Luis Figo (77′), and Ronaldo Nazario (81′) put Los Merengues in the driving seat. Monaco, however, still had a little fight left in them, and they reduced the deficit with former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes’s clinical strike in the 83rd minute.

In front of their fans, Monaco played a flawless second leg, making one of the greatest underdog comebacks in UCL history.

Raul Gonzalez added to Madrid’s advantage in the 36th minute, but Ludovic Guily restored parity just 10 minutes later. Ezequiel Lavezzi gave PSG the perfect start, firing them into the lead in the fourth minute. Chelsea talisman Eden Hazard restored parity for the hosts with a 27th-minute penalty. However, David Luiz’s 61st-minute own goal restored PSG’s advantage. In injury time, things went from bad to worse for the Blues, as Javier Pastore found the back of the net for the Parisians.

The second leg at Stamford Bridge painted a different picture. Chelsea came alive in the game, attacking with intent and ultimately coming away with a 2-0 win. Walter Pandiani popped up with the goal in the 11th minute, putting pressure on the hosts in front of a packed San Siro. Milan took a while to find their groove, but once they did, Deportivo did not stand a chance. Kaka landed the first blow in the 45th minute before Andriy Shevchenko fired Milan into the lead. Kaka (49′) and Andrea Pirlo (53′) then scored in quick succession to seal a 4-1 win for the hosts.

Even the most ardent supporters had written Deportivo La Coruna off. The players, however, believed in themselves and produced one of the greatest UCL comebacks in history. First-leg scorer Pandiani kicked off the comeback with his fifth-minute effort. In the 35th minute, Juan Carlos Valeron made it 2-0 at Riazor. Just before the break, Albert Luque found the netting to put Deportivo ahead on aggregate. Fully aware of Milan’s quality, Deportivo did not make the mistake of only protecting their lead. They piled men forward and secured the insurance goal through Fran in the 76th minute.
