Jonny Clayton says he and Gerwyn Price are ready to ‘do some damage’ at the World Cup of Darts as Wales look to cause an upset against England.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wales’ Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price are hoping to cause an upset against England at the World Cup of Darts.<\/p>\n

England will be represented by world No. 1 and No. 2 Luke Humphries and Luke Littler. Predictably, they are heavily favoured to win the tournament by fans, pundits and bookmakers ahead of the action.<\/p>\n

Price, who reached the Premier League play-offs alongside Humphries and Littler, believes they are rightly favourites.<\/p>\n

“There’s no reason why they’re not favourites, but there’s a lot of good teams that are going to be there.<\/p>\n

“Anybody can win it, but they’re definitely favourites.”<\/p>\n

The tournament gets underway in Frankfurt on Thursday, with Clayton and Price eyeing a third success at the event.<\/p>\n

They first won the World Cup as a pairing in 2020, before adding a second title in 2023. Wales were unable to retain the trophy in 2024 though, as England claimed the bragging rights through Humphries and Michael Smith.<\/p>\n

England head into the tournament as first seeds, while Wales are second seeds. Scotland and Northern Ireland follow as third and fourth seeds. Due to their seeding position, all four nations start in Saturday’s second round.<\/p>\n

Wales’ Clayton and Price Eye England Upset at World Cup of Darts<\/h2>\n

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales<\/em>, Clayton said he and Price can cause an upset against the English: “All the talk is about the two Lukes [Humphries and Littler], but I’m sure me and Gez can do something about that.<\/p>\n

“Gezzy is a great front runner, and I think I’m a pretty good number two, so we click as a team.<\/p>\n

“Hopefully we will do some damage this year. If we can lift that trophy for a third time, it’d be great.”<\/p>\n

The Scottish also believe they have what it takes to beat Humphries and Littler. Peter Wright, who is partnered with Gary Anderson, said Scotland will show England ‘who’s boss’<\/a> if they meet in the final.<\/p>\n

Of course, the tournament is played in a doubles format, and Clayton believes that he and Price’s experiences in the world of rugby provide them with an advantage in the team-based event.<\/p>\n

“We go out as a team, and I think the rugby background helps, we’ve played in team games before, and I know rugby is completely different to darts, but it is the team mentality.<\/p>\n

“We believe in each other, and you have to believe in your teammate.”<\/p>\n

‘The Ferret’ continued, revealing how proud he is to have another opportunity to represent his nation.<\/p>\n

“There’s no better feeling than representing Wales. Being a Welshman, I’m so proud when I put that jersey on.<\/p>\n

“No matter what sport you play, if you can represent your country, there is no better feeling.”<\/p>\n
