Brazil manager and former Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced to prison over tax fraud.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 66-year-old Italian failed to pay tax on his image rights revenue while he was Real Madrid boss in 2014.<\/p>\n

Luckily for Ancelotti, Spanish law dictates that any sentence under two years for non-violent crime usually sees a defendant avoid serving jail time.<\/p>\n

He therefore won’t spend any actual time behind bars, thanks to his 12-month sentence.<\/p>\n

Instead, he has been fined more than \u00a3332,000.<\/p>\n

And in better news for Ancelotti, he has been acquitted of a further tax charge from 2015, also relating to image rights.<\/p>\n

He was first indicted for suspected tax irregularities in 2020, when he was managing Everton.<\/p>\n

Ancelotti, who joined Brazil in June<\/strong><\/a>, was accused of defrauding the Spanish government of \u00a3833k between 2014 and 2015, during his first spell at Madrid.<\/p>\n

Carlo Ancelotti Hits Back After Tax Fraud Case<\/h2>\n

Speaking earlier this year, Ancelotti denounced the news.<\/p>\n

He said:\u00a0\u201cThis is an old story.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Prosecutor\u2019s Office believes I was a resident in 2015, and I believe I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fine has been paid, and the case is in the hands of my lawyers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m convinced I\u2019m innocent. Let\u2019s see what the judge decides.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ancelotti denies the current allegations, though he did admit to underpaying tax in 2014, blaming errors by his former accountants.<\/p>\n

During the trial, he told the court he did not intend to defraud the treasury.<\/p>\n

Every Footballer And Manager Accused Of Tax Fraud<\/h2>\n

Cristiano Ronaldo<\/h3>\n

\"Portugal<\/p>\n

Portuguese icon Ronaldo was fined \u20ac18.8 million (\u00a316.2 million) in 2019.<\/p>\n

According to prosecutors, he dodged tax while playing for Real Madrid from 2010 to 2014.<\/p>\n

Ronaldo, who is approaching 1,000 career goals<\/strong><\/a>, chose to settle the case in order to avoid a potential 23-month prison sentence.<\/p>\n

Lionel Messi<\/h3>\n

In 2017, Lionel Messi was \u20ac252,000 (\u00a3223,000) by Spanish courts over tax fraud charges.<\/p>\n

Initially handed a 21-month prison sentence, Messi was instead fined\u00a0\u20ac400 for each day of the sentence.<\/p>\n

Messi and father Jorge were found guilty of defrauding Spain\u00a0of \u20ac4.1m (\u00a33.4m) between 2007 and 2009.<\/p>\n

His father was also fined\u00a0\u20ac180,000.<\/p>\n

The duo were found to be using tax havens in Uruquay and Belize to conceal earnings from image rights.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Messi and his father made a voluntary “corrective payment” of \u20ac5m to make up for their unpaid tax bill.<\/p>\n

Luka Modric<\/h3>\n

\"Luca<\/p>\n

World Cup finalist and Croatian legend Luka Modric has also been in trouble for tax reasosn.<\/p>\n

In 2018, he was given an eight-month suspended sentence and fined \u20ac348,000 (\u00a3330,000)<\/p>\n

He entered a guilty plea of defrauding the treasury of \u20ac870,000 (\u00a3784,000).<\/p>\n

Modrid is claimed to have used a Luxembourg-based company to help avoid paying tax while at Real Madrid.<\/p>\n

Jose Mourinho<\/h3>\n

\"Mourinho<\/p>\n

And another high-profile figure is Joe Mourinho. The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea boss was fined\u00a0\u20ac2m and given a one-year suspended\u00a0 prison sentence.<\/p>\n

Mourinho spent three years with Madrid, when he accused of using offshore accounts in Ireland, New Zealand and the British Virgin Islands to hide image rights revenue.<\/p>\n

He reportedly made a deal with authorities to serve two six-month, suspended sentences.<\/p>\n

Radamel Falcao<\/h3>\n

Colombian striker and former Man United man Radamel Falcao was handed a 16-month suspended sentence for hiding \u00a34.7 million.<\/p>\n

He was fined \u00a37.8 million for the trouble.<\/p>\n

Neymar<\/h3>\n

Brazilian superstar Neymar had a brush with authorities in Spain and Brazil over a \u00a314.7 million tax evasion charge.<\/p>\n

He had millions worth of assets frozen, and was eventually cleared, but not before paying an \u00a3880,000 fine.<\/p>\n

James Rodriguez<\/h3>\n

The Colombian was charged with \u00a310 million in unpaid tax in Spain.<\/p>\n

Spanish authorities agreed to drop the case, once Rodriguez agreed to pay a \u00a33.3 million fine.<\/p>\n

Angel di Maria<\/h3>\n

\"Angel<\/p>\n

Ex-Manchester United winger Di Maria was given a one-year sentence for tax offences in Spain.<\/p>\n

He was fined \u00a31.6 million for dodging over \u00a31 million in tax.<\/p>\n

Marcelo<\/h3>\n

\"Marcelo<\/p>\n

Brazilian fullback Marcelo was fined \u00a31 million and given a four-month sentence after hiding \u00a3424,000 in tax.<\/p>\n

Javier Mascherano<\/h3>\n

Another former Barcelona man, Javier Mascherano failed to pay \u00a31.25 million in taxes.<\/p>\n

He was given a one-year sentence and ordered to repay \u00a31.8 million.<\/p>\n

Iker Casillas<\/h3>\n

And finally, former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas had to settle with Spanish authorities in 2014.<\/p>\n

He eventually paid \u00a31.6 million back to the government.<\/p>\n
