Team Europe’s Ryder Cup Record On US Soil Explained

Team Europe travel to America in an attempt to successfully retain the Ryder Cup. But just when was the last time the Europeans won the Ryder Cup on US soil?

After sweeping Team USA aside two years ago at Marco Simone in Rome at the 44th Ryder Cup, Team Europe aim to win the biennial team golf event on US soil for the first time in 13 years.

When Did Europe Last Win The Ryder Cup In America?

There have been a total of 22 Ryder Cup’s in history played on American soil.

Despite winning 15 Ryder Cup’s in total (including Great Britain & Ireland), Team Europe have won just four of these when competing away from home on US soil.

Hence why golf betting sites are giving Keegan Bradley and Team USA the edge this year as the 4/6 favourites to regain the Ryder Cup.

Evidently, Team Europe aren’t as strong on the road as they are when hosting a Ryder Cup. Like in any sport, you’re likely to have a far better record at home. This goes for football, rugby and a wide range of other sports.

On the flip side, USA have won just 10 of their 27 Ryder Cup’s on European soil, with their last triumph across the Atlantic Sea coming way back in 1993 – 32 years ago!

Although Europe have won just four of their 11 away Ryder Cup’s in America, they have enjoyed success on US soil far more recently than Team USA have. In fact, Europe have won three Ryder Cup’s on US soil since the Americans last won in Europe.

Europe’s four wins on US soil came in 1987 at Muirfield Village in Ohio, 1995 at Oak Hill in New York, 2004 at Oakland Hills in Michigan and in 2012 at Medinah in Illinois.

Three of these have come in the last 30 years. This proves that although America’s record is better overall in the Ryder Cup both at home and on the road, it’s Europe who have enjoyed far more recent success on their travels.

Team Europe captain Luke Donald clearly has his work cut out this year at Bethpage Black, especially against a US team who are being paid at the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Europe Ryder Cup Record When Playing In USA

The Ryder Cup has been contested between Europe and America from 1979 onwards, with a total of 11 biennial tournaments in this 46 year period (not including the upcoming event).

Europe have had far more success at the Ryder Cup in general than Great Britain & Ireland did before hand prior to 1979.

Here is a brief look at Team Europe’s record when playing the Ryder Cup away from home in on US soil:
