{"id":66015,"date":"2025-10-08T15:25:36","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T15:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/?p=66015"},"modified":"2025-10-08T15:25:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T15:25:36","slug":"watford-manager-payoffs-last-ten-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/watford-manager-payoffs-last-ten-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Watford Fork Out In Excess Of \u00a320 Million Paying Off Sacked Managers In Last Ten Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Watford have spent tens of millions in manager payoffs over the last ten years, after news broke of yet another sacking at Vicarage Road.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the least secure job in world football, being Watford manager is not for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n<p>Or at least, not for those looking for stability and longevity in their role.<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets have hired and fired a ridiculous number of bosses under the ownership of the Pozzo family, who purchased the club in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/next-watford-manager-betting-odds\/\"><strong>Watford manager speculation<\/strong><\/a> is never far from the news.<\/p>\n<p>And this week, the club parted ways with yet another coach, and re-hired one from their bulging catalogue of ex-managers.<\/p>\n<h2>Watford Sack Paulo Pezzolano<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/watford-fans-ridicule-awful-2025-26-home-kit-that-might-be-worst-of-all-time\/\"><strong>Watford fans have ridiculed their &#8216;awful&#8217; home kit<\/strong><\/a> this season, but it&#8217;s the manager merry-go-round that&#8217;s drawn criticism from rivals.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, reports emerged confirming that Watford had sacked head coach Paulo Pezzolano after just 10 games in charge.<\/p>\n<p>The 42-year-old was only appointed manager of the Championship outfit in May.<\/p>\n<p>He took over from Tom Cleverly, who was himself sacked after just over a year &#8211; a lifetime in Watford manager terms.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: Watford are set to sack manager Paulo Pezzolano with the club 11th in the table \ud83d\udfe1<\/p>\n<p>Crunch talks are being held today with the club hierarchy expected to part ways with the 42-year-old. <\/p>\n<p>Sky Sports News understands Javi Gracia is the number one target to replace\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/blM1TxnXT3\">pic.twitter.com\/blM1TxnXT3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkySportsNews\/status\/1975502023853293780?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 7, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Having finished 14th last season, Watford have started the new campaign in mixed form.<\/p>\n<p>But they had improved in recent weeks, taking seven points from their last three games to help them climb to 11th in the table.<\/p>\n<p>Pezzolano was given even fewer games than former boss Rob Edwards, who oversaw just 11 games in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards is now managing second-placed Middlesbrough.<\/p>\n<h2>Javi Gracia Named Next Watford Manager<\/h2>\n<p>Despite previously sacking him in September 2019, Watford have named Javi Gracia as their new manager.<\/p>\n<p>Gracia spent 20 months at Vicarage Road from 2018-2019, the longest spell of any Watford manager in the past 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>He took them to a best-ever Premier League finish of 11th, as well as reaching the FA Cup final.<\/p>\n<p>But he was sacked with his side bottom of the table, replaced by another former boss in Quique Sanchez Flores.<\/p>\n<p>Flores was then sacked for a second time after just three months of his second stint.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">He&#39;s home.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Watford Football Club (@WatfordFC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WatfordFC\/status\/1975901492566765915?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Watford said of Gracia&#8217;s appointment:\u00a0&#8220;In appointing Javi, the club are confident he will bring the qualities we believe are vital for this young squad: consistency in team selection, harmony within the dressing room and a strong connection with our supporters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very pleased to welcome back Javi,&#8221; added Watford chairman and chief executive Scott Duxbury.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His passion, leadership and clear strategy will help us build stability, unity and momentum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are sure there are many supporters who wished Javi had never departed in 2019.
