With that victory, City have now won six consecutive matches on home turf.

Last night 🩵 pic.twitter.com/HxYYXCauq1

— Phil Foden (@PhilFoden) November 6, 2025

It follows on from a comfortable 3-1 win over Bournemouth in the league last Sunday.

Arne Slot’s Reds, meanwhile, prior to last weekend, had lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions. This saw pressure begin to mount on Slot, with the Dutchman being backed among the favourites in the Premier League sack race betting odds market.

They have since ended that poor run though, having prevailed in their last two.

Their four-game losing streak in the English top-flight ended with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield last Saturday, which was followed by an impressive 1-0 win over Real Madrid in Europe.

With both sides heading into this weekend’s Etihad clash off the back of strong, well-earned continental victories, it promises to be an intriguing encounter in the North West.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Tactical Analysis

Manchester City Tactics

Guardiola and City have made clear changes to their style of play in the early parts of this season, with their possession-based philosophy now blending with a more transitional style.

It comes off the back of an underwhelming campaign last term, largely influenced by Rodri’s ACL injury, as they failed to claim a major piece of silverware for the first time since 2016-17.

The appointment of Pep Lijnders, formerly Jurgen Klopp’s assistant manager at Liverpool, is said to have been vital in these changes being implemented for the 2025-26 campaign.

Lijnders was sacked as the manager by RB Salzburg in December of last year.

Now having returned to the Premier League as an assistant, the Dutchman has helped intensify City’s counter-pressing, while their attacks have become faster and more direct.

When they win the ball, they try to instantly attack the opposition rather than building up the play slowly. This is particularly evident when using Jeremy Doku or Savinho on the flanks.

As seen in the win over Dortmund in midweek, their pace and trickery are a constant nightmare for defenders. These traits allow them to take on opposing full backs, before either cutting in and sending shots in on goal or crossing to the main man Erling Haaland in the middle.

Jeremy Doku vs Dortmund pic.twitter.com/cYwKUYFwHx

— OB (@ofbmar) November 6, 2025

Haaland has undoubtedly been their key player thus far this term, while summer signing Tijjani Reijnders has also stood out, with the 25-year-old striker topping the Premier League goalscorer charts with 13 goals in 10 appearances. In all competitions, he has 18 goals in 14 matches.

Of course, with so many changes to their squad over the summer, it was bound to take time for the players to get used to the changes to Guardiola’s style. This was clear when they suffered back-to-back defeats by Tottenham and Brighton back in August.

The Cityzens have seemingly found their groove since then though, having lost just one of their last 15 matches in all competitions. That being said, their loss away at Aston Villa last month proves that there’s still work to be done before they’re back to being the force they once were.

How Will Manchester City Line Up vs Liverpool?

As has been the case in the majority of their matches this term, both domestically and in Europe, City are set to line up in a 4-1-4-1 formation when Liverpool come to visit on Sunday.

The only confirmed absentee for the clash is Mateo Kovacic, who is ruled out with a long-term ankle issue. Rodri is also a doubt after missing the midweek win over Borussia Dortmund.

If the Spaniard is available though, which we suspect he very well could be, he should come straight back into the starting lineup in place of his compatriot Nico Gonzalez.

We only expect one other change from the lineup that was fielded in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, and that’s Ruben Dias coming in for John Stones at the back.

Rayan Cherki also has a strong chance of returning to the lineup, likely in place of Savinho if he does, having registered two goals and three assists in his last three matches for City.

Manchester City’s predicted starting XI vs Liverpool

Liverpool Tactics

Under Klopp, Liverpool were famed for their ‘heavy metal football’ style of play. This was a high-energy, intense style, where they aimed to win the ball back immediately after losing possession.

Although elements of this remain under Slot, particularly their aggression and pressing, their style of play became much more measured and calculated following his appointment.

One of the most noticeable changes has come with the Reds’ full-backs.

While Klopp’s full-backs tended to bomb up and down the touchline to provide width and send crosses into the box, Slot’s full-backs often invert centrally to form triangles with midfielders.

Higher up the pitch, Slot’s forwards chop and change roles over the course of 90 minutes.

This was seen on Tuesday night against Real Madrid. Florian Wirtz started the game on the left wing but consistently moved central, while striker Hugo Ekitike often drifted out to the left.

Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, retained his position on the right wing. He typically stays near the touchline in a more advanced role, affording him space to attack the opposing left-back.

Another key tactic Liverpool employed in the win over Los Blancos was that their defence stayed in a low block. This negated Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior from making deep runs in behind. They may opt to do the same against Doku and Haaland on Sunday.

Ultimately though, they sealed all three points against the LaLiga leaders in midweek thanks to the quality they possess from set-pieces. Alexis Mac Allister met Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick with a fierce header beyond Thibaut Courtois, who looked unstoppable up to that point.

They’ll look to take advantage from set-pieces again on Sunday, whether that be directly from a Szoboszlai free-kick or from Virgil van Dijk getting on the end of a well-worked corner routine.

How Will Liverpool Line Up vs Manchester City?

Slot made one change from the win over Aston Villa for their continental clash against Real in midweek, as Wirtz came in for Netherlands international forward Cody Gakpo on the left.

Wirtz impressed against the Spanish giants, so we expect him to retain his starting berth here.

Elsewhere, we can’t envisage any changes. Milos Kerkez is an option to replace Robertson, but given the Scotsman’s impressive showings of late, we find that scenario to be unlikely.

In terms of injuries, the Reds are confirmed to be without Giovanni Leoni, Jeremie Frimpong and Alisson Becker. Record-signing Alexander Isak is also a major doubt due to a groin issue.

Liverpool’s predicted starting XI vs Manchester City

Manchester City vs Liverpool: Who To Watch

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Manchester City forward Haaland is certainly the standout star to keep an eye on this weekend.

For both club and country this term, the Norway international has registered an incredible 26 goals and three assists in 16 matches across all competitions.

He added to his tally with a well-taken first-time finish against his former club Borussia Dortmund in midweek, following on from a brace in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth last weekend.

Against Liverpool though, his record isn’t the greatest. He has managed just three goals in eight appearances against the Merseysiders since arriving in England back in 2022.

Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Foden is another City star to keep an eye on at the Etihad on Sunday evening.

The England international endured a tough start to the campaign, but after providing an assist in the win over the Cherries last Sunday, he impressively netted a brace against Dortmund.

Thanks to his exploits, the 25-year-old was named the Champions League Player of the Week.

He has since been recalled to Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad as well.

Looking back to his best, we’re expecting Foden to shine against Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Liverpool talisman Salah is another that has struggled at the start of this season, but despite underperforming, he heads into this one having scored in each of his last two league outings.

He scored in the defeat by Brentford and netted the second in the 2-0 win over Villa.

Even if he hadn’t scored in those games though, you simply cannot count Salah out in games of this magnitude. More often than not, he is the one that provides the goods for the Reds against top class sides such as Manchester City.

His record against City backs that up. In 23 games, the Egyptian has registered an incredible 13 goals and eight assists. This includes two goals and two assists against them last term.

Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool)

We’re also expecting a standout performance from Hungarian midfielder Szoboszlai.

Featuring at right-back earlier in the campaign, the 25-year-old has returned to his favoured attacking midfield role, where he has produced some of his best performances yet.

He is yet to miss a minute for Liverpool in the Premier League this term and has totalled two goals and five assists in 15 appearances across all competitions.

This includes an assist for Mac Allister against Real Madrid in midweek.

What Do The Manchester City vs Liverpool Stats Suggest?

Both City and Liverpool lead as the division’s top goalscorers with 18 goals apiece.

This is despite the fact that the pair are underperforming their xG (expected goals).

The Cityzens have an xG of 18.76 (sixth in the division) this term, underperforming by a mere 0.76, while the Reds boast an xG of 19.73 (first in the division), underperforming by 1.73.

Defensively, City boast a much better record than their Sunday evening counterparts.

Guardiola’s side have allowed an xG of just 10.89 against them this term (third lowest in the division) and have conceded just eight goals (joint second lowest) across 10 games.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have allowed an xG of 14.98 (seventh highest) and have conceded 14 goals (also seventh highest), more than the likes of Everton, Fulham, Sunderland and more.

These statistics suggest that we should see goals when City and Liverpool face off at the Etihad, and plenty of them, but with the majority likely to be in favour of the hosts amid the visitors’ underwhelming defensive record in the league thus far in 2025-26.

Manchester City vs Liverpool H2H Stats

In terms of head-to-head meetings, both historically and recently, the statistics favour Liverpool.

Throughout history, the Reds have beaten City 110 times, 58 of their meetings have ended in draws, and the Cityzens have come out on top over the Merseyside outfit a total of 60 times.

Last season, Slot’s side did the double over Guardiola and co. with two 2-0 triumphs.

It extended their unbeaten run against the Cityzens to four straight matches, having played out two 1-1 draws against the 10-time champions of England during the 2023-24 season.

City’s last win over Liverpool came in April 2023 when they breezed to a 5-1 triumph at home.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Last Five Meetings:

Manchester City 0-2 Liverpool (Premier League) –
