and it doesn&#8217;t bode well for Manchester United fans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The January window is perhaps the most important month of the Premier League season.<\/p>\n<p>A chance to reinforce the squad midway through the campaign, some incredibly important signings have been made during it over the years.<\/p>\n<p>But which clubs tend to spend big in January, and which are more likely to hold onto their cash until the summer?<\/p>\n<p>To find out, we at <em><strong>SportsCasting<\/strong><\/em> have gone back over the last ten January windows for all 20 Premier League teams.<\/p>\n<p>We have then calculated the average spend for each team in January, with some interesting results.<\/p>\n<h4>Key Data Points:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Chelsea have the highest average January spend since 2016 (\u00a342m).<\/li>\n<li>Manchester United have the lowest average January spend of any &#8216;big six&#8217; club (\u00a315m).<\/li>\n<li>Manchester City also spend big in January, averaging \u00a334m per season.<\/li>\n<li>Aston Villa and Newcastle spend more in January than Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Man United.<\/li>\n<li>Brentford, Sunderland and Fulham spend next to nothing in January.<\/li>\n<li>January 2023 saw a record-breaking \u00a3702m total spend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Premier League January Spending Over The Past Decade<\/h2>\n<p>While not as big as the summer window in terms of spending, January still holds an important place in the Premier League season.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last decade, each January has seen an average spend of \u00a3278m across the league, equating to \u00a314m per club.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/every-premier-league-club-january-transfers-2024-25\/\"><strong>every club&#8217;s January transfers<\/strong><\/a> combined for a total spend of \u00a3422m.<\/p>\n<p>January 2023 saw the biggest overall spend, at a whopping \u00a3702m.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the Covid-19-affected season in 2020-21 meant that year&#8217;s January window saw the lowest spend (\u00a3101m) in the last ten years.<\/p>\n<p>Below, we can see the average January spend since 2016 for each of the 20 current Premier League clubs.<\/p>\n<p><code><\/code><\/p>\n<div style=\"position: relative; club over the past decade, having also spent less than Aston Villa and Newcastle United.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42497\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42497\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/03\/bruno-f-560x350.jpg\" alt=\"Bruno Fernandes, January premier league spending\" width=\"560\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/03\/bruno-f-560x350.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/03\/bruno-f-350x219.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/03\/bruno-f-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/03\/bruno-f.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bruno Fernandes is United&#8217;s biggest January signing in recent years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>United&#8217;s biggest January spend in that period was in 2020, when they splashed \u00a368m in total on Bruno Fernandes and a loan fee for Odion Ighalo.<\/p>\n<p>In January of 2025, United signed Patrick Dorgu and U21s player Ayden Heavan, having spent nothing in the previous three years.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the data hinting at United not spending, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/karim-adeyemi-next-club-betting-odds\/\"><strong>bookmakers have slashed odds on an \u00a380m Manchester United transfer<\/strong><\/a> happening in January.<\/p>\n<h2>Chelsea Have the Highest Average January Spend In The Premier League<\/h2>\n<p>If United are known for being frugal in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/news\/chelsea-spending-under-boehly\/\"><strong>Chelsea&#8217;s spending under Todd Boehly<\/strong><\/a> has been anything but.<\/p>\n<p>The Blues splashed a ridiculous \u00a3290m in January of 2023, massively inflating their average spend.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Chelsea&#8217;s average January spend since 2016 is a whopping \u00a342m &#8211; Clubs<\/h2>\n<p>For a long time, the Premier League has been divided between the so-called &#8216;big six&#8217; clubs and the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have been looked at as the top teams since the turn of the millennium.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29725\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29725\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/01\/Newcastle-villa-560x373.jpeg\" alt=\"Newcastle Aston Villa Charged\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/01\/Newcastle-villa-560x373.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/01\/Newcastle-villa-350x233.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/www.sportscasting.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/01\/Newcastle-villa.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aston Villa and Newcastle have outspent several top clubs in January windows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But league position hasn&#8217;t always matched this view.
