Trainer Lucinda Russell (and Michael Scudamore) are yet to train the winner of the Coral Gold Cup – or the Hennessy to older racing folk. But that could all change this Saturday as they’ve one of the big fancies in Myretown.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This eight year-old will head to Newbury having won three of his last four chase starts and there are also several Coral Gold Cup trends in his favour.<\/p>\n

Suggesting the Cheltenham Festival winner is the one to be with in the ITV Racing<\/a> contest this weekend.<\/p>\n

Stable confidence coming into the Coral Gold Cup is high too.<\/p>\n

With his trainer Lucinda Russell, who has trained two Grand National winners, saying Myretown is “One Of The Best Ones We’ve Trained”.<\/em><\/p>\n

However, despite not winning the race yet – Russell, who now trains alongside her son-in-law Michael Scudamore – does have many links to the big Newbury Handicap.<\/p>\n

Husband Peter rode the winners in 1988 (Strands Of Gold) and 1991 (Chatham).<\/p>\n

Plus Peter’s son Tom Scudamore bettered his dad with three Coral Gold Cup wins on Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018) and Cloth Cap (2020).<\/p>\n

So Myretown, who was an easy winner of the Ultima Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, will be looking to give the family more success in Saturday’s Coral Gold Cup.<\/p>\n

And if you are in his corner – there is further good news, with several big Coral Gold Cup trends in his favour.<\/p>\n

Plus, one of these older Hennessy winners was the mighty Denman (nine) in 2009. With the other the ten year-old Sizing Tennessee in 2018.<\/p>\n

Myretown is eight though and this age does have a good recent record – with last year’s winner Kandoo Kid also eight.<\/p>\n

While 50% of the last ten successful horses here aged EIGHT.<\/p>\n

The next Coral Gold Cup trend in Myretown’s favour is horses with between two and five chase wins have a good record.<\/p>\n

In the last 23 runnings, a massive 87% fell into this Coral Gold Cup stat.<\/p>\n

And so does Myretown, having won three times over the bigger obstacles (from five starts).<\/p>\n

With his last win, his eleven-length success in the Ultima Handicap at the Cheltenham Festival (see below).<\/p>\n

He’s up 15lbs for that win.<\/p>\n

But if Russell is saying he’s one of the best she’s had – even a mark of 142 now would surely make him very well-handicapped.<\/p>\n

Based on her 2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler being rated 162 at his peak and 146 when he won at Aintree.<\/p>\n
