Fred and Peter Done, the founders of popular bookmaker Betfred, are top of the league when it comes to paying tax in the UK.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The brothers contributed more than \u00a3400 million to help fund public services according to The Sunday Times Tax List<\/a> for 2026.<\/p>\n

They are joined in the top 10 by Denise Coates, her father Peter and brother John, the family behind bet365.<\/p>\n

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is the youngest person to appear in the ranking which also includes Liverpool\u2019s Mo Salah.<\/p>\n

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn makes the cut and British heavyweight Anthony Joshua punched high enough to occupy 100th<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n

Haaland Nets Football’s Biggest Tax Bill<\/h2>\n

Erling Haaland contributed the most tax among the footballers included on the list.<\/p>\n

The Manchester City goal machine paid out \u00a316.9 million in tax and is the youngest person in the top 100 ranking.<\/p>\n

Haaland, 25, earns around \u00a3500,000 a week in the Premier League with a further estimated \u00a310 million a year from bonuses and image rights.<\/p>\n

Mo Salah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Liverpool\u2019s Mo Salah is the second-highest contributor from football\u2019s elite, his \u00a314.5 million bill placing him 81st<\/sup> overall.<\/p>\n

The pair occupy the top two spots when it comes to football\u2019s top 10 taxpayers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is in third.<\/p>\n

The Manchester United star earns an estimated \u00a3350,000 a week at Old Trafford though he is leaving at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

A surprise entry in fourth is Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He has just walked away from Stamford Bridge and a weekly salary of \u00a3325,000 to look for a new club with Fulham and West Ham battling for his signature.<\/p>\n

Betting Giants Betfred The UK\u2019s No 1<\/h2>\n

Fred and Peter Done paid \u00a3400.1 million in tax during 2024-25, nearly \u00a370 million more than Moscow-born financial trading entrepreneur Alex Gerko, who is second in The Sunday Times\u2019 top 100.<\/p>\n

The bothers founded Warrington-based Betfred in 1967.<\/p>\n

They funded their business using winnings from a bet on England to win the 1966 World Cup.<\/p>\n

The betting industry is bracing itself for a gambling tax hike in April brought about by Rachel Reeves\u2019 autumn Budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fred Done warned that any changes to present tax levies could result in shop closures.<\/p>\n

Betfred recently returned to profitability<\/a> after withdrawing from some of its overseas operations to focus on its UK business.<\/p>\n

Higher profits mean bigger dividends which may go some way to explaining the Done brothers\u2019 increase in personal tax.<\/p>\n

Bet365 owners the Coates family are fifth in the ranking having paid \u00a3227.1 million in tax.<\/p>\n

That was a sizeable drop from the \u00a3364 million they forked out in 2024.<\/p>\n

Denise Coates is Britain\u2019s richest self-made woman and paid herself \u00a3104.3 million in salary from bet365 last year.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Names From Sport<\/h2>\n

Former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley ranks in ninth having paid \u00a3175.9 million in tax.<\/p>\n

Through the success of his retail business Ashley owned Newcastle for 14 years and has been linked with bids for other clubs since leaving St James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n
