While all of the last five winners were aged either 4 or 6.

In short, it’s probably just best to ignore horses aged 7 or older here – Erzindjan (7) and Dutch Decoy (8).

78% Of The Last 23 Winners Carried 9st 5lbs Or Less

Being a handicap then weight carried is always worth noting too.

The last two winners Liberty Lane and Astro King hiked a massive 9-12 to victory – which was the biggest weight winner in modern times – well, since 1977 is as far back as we went.

Boiling Point will try to become the third horse in-a-row to win with 9-12.

But despite these big weight-carrying performances – this Cambridgeshire Handicap trend that tells us 18 of the last 23 winners carried 9st 5lbs or less (78%).

Only Thunder Run and Boiling Point are carrying 9st 5lbs or more this year.

This stat also came in with 8 of the last 10 winners, but I guess a small word of caution based on the last two winners carrying 9-12.

While 12 of the last 23 winners carried 8st 12lbs or less.

70% Of Favourites Unplaced In The Last 23 Runnings

The record of the favourites in this competitive handicap has been fair.

This contest always attracts a max of 35 runners (24 this year) and so it’s no shock the record of the market leaders is going to be average at best.

However, the race has still produced four winning jollies in the last 23 (17%), which is not too shabby considering.

That said, the favourites seem to either win or bomb out as 16 of the last 23 (70%) have also been unplaced.

The last winning Cambridgeshire Handicap favourite was Lord North in 2019 – the only winning market leader in the last 10 runnings.

Last year’s favourite Poniros (6/1) was only 22nd – but made up for it when winning the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2025.

As mentioned, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Treble Tee is the horse expected to go off favourite – but a lot can change in the betting between now and raceday.

With the John and Thady Gosden-trained Fifth Column also prominent in the market.

The Average Winning SP In The Last 23 Runnings Is 22/1

Following on from the favourites record in the race, this contest has also seen an average winning SP of 22/1 in the last 23 years.

Yes, this figure has been skewed slightly with the 100/1 winner Spanish Don in 2004, but it’s still worth knowing that horses a bit down the market can’t be overlooked.

In fact, four of the last five winners have returned 20/1, 25/1 and 40/1 (2), and we also had a 50/1 hero in 2017.

But last year’s winner Liberty Lane was a bit more fancied – winning at 8/1.

Very High Draws Have Dominated In The Cambridgeshire Recently

The draw has been a good trend in this big Newmarket race in recent years too.

Yes, of course, with a max of 35 there is naturally going to be more horses drawn in double-figures – backed up with 18 of the last 23 winners hailing from stalls 10+.

However, in more recent runnings the ‘really’ high draws have been favoured – with EIGHT of the last nine winners coming from berths 21+.

The 2023 winner Astro King won from draw 35, while since 2017 we’ve also had two drawn in 29. But Liberty Lane last year defied this stat – winning from gate 4.

For those that don’t know, the Cambridgeshire Handicap is run on the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket – which is a straight course.

With 24 runners this year, only only four horses are drawn 21+ – Treasure Time, Real Gain, Erzindjan and Cash.

Trainer John Gosden Has The Best Record Cambridgeshire Handicap Record

John Gosden Has Won The Cambridgeshire Handicap Five Times

Finally, if you like to stick with trainers that have a good record in races then John Gosden should be high up your list.

The Newmarket-based handler has fired in five overall winners in the Cambridgeshire – with his first coming in 1994 with the classy Halling.

While his most recent winner came in 2019 with the recently retired Lord North.

This haul of five wins in the race have also made him in the most successful trainer in the history of the race.

This year Mr Gosden is firing two darts at the race – Fifth Column and Westridge.

John Gosden Cambridgeshire Handicap Winners

1994 Halling

2007 Pipedreamer

2008 Tazeez

2018 Wissahickon

2019 Lord North

Which Horses Tick The Most Cambridgeshire Handicap Trends?

TREASURE TIME – Drawn in 21, where two of the last eight winners have been and we’ve also seen eight of the last nine come from gates 21+.
