Vanderbilt’s Football Team Will Make History Bringing On a Woman To Join The Team
Vanderbilt’s football team has struggled so far during the 2020-21 NCAA football season. The Commodores have not won a game yet and are at the bottom of the list in college football. But, Vanderbilt will be a part of history as they bring on a woman to join their football team.
Sarah Fuller is set to become the first woman to play in a Power Five football game as Vanderbilt takes on Missouri.
Vanderbilt’s football team has struggled over the years
Playing in one of the top conferences in all of college, Vanderbilt has struggled when it comes to football. The SEC is filled with talented teams, and when it comes to football, many teams compete at a high level in the conference. Unfortunately, for Vanderbilt, they have not seen a winning season in seven years.
Their last winning season came during the 2013-14 season. Vanderbilt finished with a 9-4 overall record, and they won their last bowl game defeating Houston in the BBVA Compass Bowl. Though they haven’t had a winning season in over seven years, they have made recent appearances in bowl games. In 2016, they finished with a 6-7 overall record and played in the Independence Bowl against North Carolina State. Vanderbilt lost 41-17.
Their last bowl game appearance came in 2018 as they appeared in the Texas Bowl against Baylor. It was a battle, but Vanderbilt could not pull off the win as they lost 45-38. When you have teams like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Florida in your conference, it’s a battle to become one of the top teams, especially in football. Though Vanderbilt has struggled in recent years, playing in a conference like the SEC only helps them become a better football program.
Vanderbilt winless so far during the 2020-21 season
The 2020-21 season has not gone the way Vanderbilt envisioned. Vanderbilt had an opportunity to win their first game of the season against a top team in Texas A&M. At the time, Texas A&M was ranked No. 10 in the country. Playing at College Station, Vanderbilt went in there and gave it their all. Going into the fourth quarter, Texas A&M held a slim 14-12 lead over Vanderbilt. Texas A&M scored three points in the last quarter to win 17-12.
It’s just been one of those seasons for Vanderbilt as they look for their first win of the season. They had another opportunity to win their first game when they took on Kentucky. They ended up losing that game 38-35. After their game against Missouri, they will have one game left, and that will be against Georgia.
Vanderbilt bringing on Sarah Fuller to join the team
Sarah Fuller is the latest player to join Vanderbilt’s football team. Fuller is a goalkeeper on the women’s soccer team, and she tried out for the football team and was added during the week. Vanderbilt had a graduate transfer opt-out of the season, and a few of their specialists had to go into quarantine this week due to COVID-19 testing.
According to ESPN, only two women have played football at the FBS level: Katie Hnida of New Mexico and April Goss of Kent State. Fuller could join that list if she makes an appearance during the season. If she appears in Vanderbilt’s game against Missouri, she will make history, becoming the first woman to play in a Power Five football game.
