Von Miller has not taken the field since 2019. After this development, it seems he might not take the field again.
Multiple sources report that the Denver Broncos linebacker is under criminal investigation in Colorado. Authorities have not revealed what he is under investigation for. However, a report from KDVR indicates that the investigation has to do with domestic violence allegations from Miller‘s ex-fiancée, Megan Denise.
The downfall of Von Miller
On the field, Von Miller will certainly go down as one of the greatest linebackers in Broncos history, if not NFL history. He holds the team’s all-time sack record, has been to the Pro Bowl all but two seasons of his career, and was a key component on the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 champion squad. In fact, he was the Most Valuable Player of that Super Bowl, forcing Cam Newton’s decisive fumble in the fourth quarter which led to the game-sealing touchdown.
However, his career after 2015 has not been quite as rosy as the years that came before it. While Miller himself kept up his high level of play and regularly reached the Pro Bowl, his Broncos became a losing franchise, as the rest of the pieces of the Super Bowl-winning club disappeared. Before the start of the 2020 season, Miller dislocated a tendon near his ankle, an injury that forced him onto injured reserve. He didn’t miss a whole lot; his Broncos finished last with a 5-11 record.
After that season, John Elway stepped down as general manager. His replacement, George Paton, can choose whether to pick up Miller’s club option or free up $18 million in cap space. This decision will need to come by March 17. Of course, the revelations of the past few hours may make this decision easier.
Is there substance to these allegations?
As of now, KDVR is the only official source reporting on the possible connection to Miller’s ex-fiancee. The Parker Police Department, who is conducting the investigation, has issued the following statement:
“The case is currently under investigation, and no information can be released at this time. If the investigation determines a crime has occurred, charges will be submitted to the DA’s Office for their review.”Josh Hans, spokesman, Parker Police Department
However, earlier this month, the relationship between Miller and Denise received some media attention — and not for good reasons. On January 5, Denise shared a series of texts purportedly from Miller on her Instagram account.
In one of the texts, as shared by Outsider, Miller writes to the then-pregnant Denise, “praying for a miscarriage”, followed by the “praying hands” emoji. In another series of texts, Miller goes into a long-winded rant that lasts several texts, ending with “f–king disappear!!! and get an abortion.”
Miller’s troubled past
This is not the first time that Miller has been in trouble with the law.
In August 2013, Miller tried to purchase a gun from a local shop. A background check revealed that he had a warrant out for failing to appear in court, and Miller was subsequently arrested. The hearing related to charges of reckless driving and driving without a license, offenses which he committed the previous October.
The month after the gun club fiasco, Miller was once again arrested for driving without a license.
All of this happened at the same time that Miller was already serving a six-game suspension from the NFL for violating its substance-abuse policy. Originally, that suspension was four games. According to ESPN, the league actually increased it to six after the league found out that Miller tried to swap his positive urine sample with a clean one to fool drug testers.
