Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was not a happy camper on Monday during his media session. The three-time champion tactician was visibly upset over a Kevin Durant tweet made by NBC Sports reporter Drew Shiller.
Steve Kerr not only used his media session to call out Drew Shiller, but he reiterated that everyone inside the Warriors organization is grateful for what Kevin Durant did during his three years in Golden State.
What did Drew Shiller do to piss off Steve Kerr?
Steve Kerr appeared on the Real Ones podcast with Logan Murdock and Raja Bell of The Ringer recently. During one of the segments, the former Chicago Bulls sniper discussed how he had more fun coaching the 2019-20 Warriors team that won 15 games than the 2018-19 squad that made the NBA Finals with Kevin Durant leading the way.
Drew Shiller, who covers the Warriors for NBC Sports Bay Area, tweeted out Kerr’s quote and twisted his words by describing the 2018-19 season as “Kevin Durant’s final season with the Warriors.” After the tweet went viral, everyone assumed Kerr was taking a jab at Durant, who now stars for the Brooklyn Nets.
Durant, who is very active on social media, responded to the tweet by saying, “This is hilarious.” Kerr never meant to take a shot at Durant, but the way Shiller tweeted the quote made it seem like the Warriors coach didn’t enjoy coaching KD.
Once Steve Kerr found out about Drew Shiller’s Kevin Durant tweet, he went off on the NBC Sports reporter.
Steve Kerr blasts Drew Shiller for his Kevin Durant tweet
Steve Kerr called out Drew Shiller during his press conference with Warriors reporters. He was angry that Shiller twisted his words and made it seem like Kevin Durant was a problem in 2018-19.
Durant was in the final year of his contract with the Warriors during the 2018-19 season. Throughout the campaign, there were rumors that the two-time Finals MVP had one foot out the door. That’s one of the main reasons Draymond Green called Durant a “bi**h” several times during their heated argument at Staples Center against the LA Clippers.
There were also whispers that Durant didn’t fully enjoy playing for Kerr. Even though KD won two titles in three years with the Warriors, he never looked thrilled on the court.
Durant left the Warriors in the summer of 2019 to sign with the Nets. Kerr and Golden State finished with the NBA’s worst record in 2019-20 before games were suspended due to COVID-19. Durant missed the entire season recovering from his Achilles tear.
Steve Kerr is one of the nicest head coaches in the NBA. However, if you do something ignorant like Drew Shiller did with his Kevin Durant tweet, the 55-year-old will get irritated.
Kevin Durant was a monster on the Warriors
In 208 games with the Warriors, Kevin Durant averaged 25.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists while shooting 52.4% from the field, 38.4% from beyond the arc, and 88.3% from the free-throw line.
The Warriors have already announced that Durant’s No. 35 jersey will be retired. After all, the Dubs don’t win two straight titles without KD.
As for Steve Kerr and Drew Shiller, the NBC Sports reporter called Kerr and apologized for his Kevin Durant tweet.
