Washington Redskins Just Dropped Revealing Hint at New Name

It has been over a week since the Washington Redskins elected to drop their team name after years of criticism. The franchise may have been financially backed into a corner to make a move, but it does represent a positive step. Washington has an opportunity to start things fresh with an entirely new image and a clean slate. That has also seen the organization drop a massive hint at what their next team name will be soon.

Washington Redskins finally drop team name

The last several years have seen a significant push toward Washington moving away from their team name that holds a racial connotation.

There was finally movement on this front after Fed Ex, who holds the naming rights to the franchise’s stadium under a $205 million deal that extends through 2025, requested the team to change their name. It has also seen sponsors, such as Nike, Amazon, and Pepsi, pressuring the organization to make that move.

All that backed team owner Dan Snyder into a corner of having to make a name change because of the backlash. Snyder pushed back at the criticism by voicing that the former moniker had historical ties. However, he was in the midst of entirely different circumstances, with the team potentially losing out on millions of dollars.

Nonetheless, it led to owner Dan Snyder to announce earlier this month that the franchise is retiring their former team name.

Washington hints at new name

Washington has effectively moved away from their former team name that has led to new merchandise with the words “Washington Football Team.”

The organization has continued to remain non-committal concerning when their new moniker will be announced. There does appear to be suggestions about what the next name could be as through their latest designs that emphasize the “W” in the logo, according to Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports.

If the “W” logo that the team is temporarily using, which appears on several of their new shirt designs and you can see at the bottom right of the image below, is indicative of the planned direction of the new nickname, we could conclude that Washington is strongly considering calling themselves the “Warriors.” The Warriors nickname was reportedly on the table this summer, before the team decided to wait a year before unveiling a new nickname.

These may be just a rumored point of view, but it’s hard to not notice the emphasis on the W in the designs. Much of that could be due to the team being located in Washington, but the franchise has the nickname Warriors as a potential replacement.

The new temporary designs could be used in a manner to see how strong the feedback is for the franchise with a W led design. There is much that can change, but it’s clear that franchise is still going through the selection process with their next name.

Many choices on the table

Washington is moving toward hammering out their selection for their next name.

It’s an opened process that points to much more than the Warriors being on the table as a possibility. DeArdo also talked about the “Flying” theme logo that could be a reference to the Redtails, a reference to the All-Black Tuskegee Airmen from WWII. Other details from various designs that suggest it could go the route of being the Bolts or Shockers due to the lightning bolt type of design to a few of their merchandise.

If anything, Washington may be trying many different themes to see what grabs the most significant positive reactions. It’s an ongoing process that the franchise has its long-term future in mind.
