Washington Redskins May Have Picked New Name
In the last couple of weeks, there has been a significant push to see the Washington Redskins change their team name. It has been an ongoing discussion for quite some time due to the racial connotations that it has. That has seen some significant business partners pull away while the NFL has pushed in that same direction leading team owner Day Snyder to consider that route heavily. With that in mind, there is one potential team name that looks to be gatherings some steam.
Push for Washington Redskins’ name change
It has been nothing short than a concerted effort to get the Washington Redskins to change their team name.
That has seen several of their significant financial partners draw a line in the sand with their stance toward creating change. That has seen FedEx, who holds the naming rights to the franchise’s stadium under a $205 million deal that extends through 2025, sent a request for the team to change their name. It has also seen sponsors, such as Nike, Amazon, and Pepsi, pressuring the organization to make that move.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has given his stance on the situation early in the process. Goodell voiced that the league will continue to hold discussions with Snyder with the hope of making that change. There are reports that they plan to ditch their current logo, but keep the same color scheme. That has led to the notion around the matter trending toward a name change coming quite soon.
Washington Redskins may be nearing changing to one name
A few suggestions were thrown out concerning possible name changes as it appears to be imminent with various reports confirming that notion.
Through much of that time, the Red Tails, a reference to the Tuskegee all-black fighter pilots during WWII, had garnered much traction. However, there is a telling indication that the franchise may be nearing choosing another name as Darren Heitner of Sports Agent Blog has pointed out that there are six pending applications to the United States Patent and Trade Mark Office for the name Washington Warriors.
It’s hard to indicate whether that has to do with the franchise putting in those requests, but it’s quite a particular name. There hadn’t been any previous mention of that moniker being tied to the franchise. However, Kevin Sheehan previously mentioned on The Team 980 on their latest podcast that he would place a significant bet on that being the next name. (H/T Larry Brown Sports)
“I think people do know that the Redskins have marked Washington Warriors just in case and that this has been the way. I would bet big money on the Warriors being the new name for the football team.”
It’s hard to nail it down to any name securely, but the signs are pointing toward Warriors being the frontrunner in that regard.
A change is coming soon for the Washington Redskins
Unlike the previous push for a change seven years ago, the Washington Redskins have been guided into a corner where nothing but change can occur.
Washington is running the risks of losing out significantly financially from several of its major partners. That alone is enough to lead them to change the name that they have held since 1933. Much of that push from corporations may be due to the recent protests for social change as it has been a long time coming in many regards.
Nonetheless, Washington will have to shake things up significantly to finally erase themselves from that name that has a racial connotation to Native Americans. It’s only a matter of time before the team announces what their new name will almost entirely rebrand the franchise.
