Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers upset Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55. Even though Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time, the Chiefs were favored to defeat the Buccaneers since they were the defending champions and only lost one game in 2020.
Tom Brady prevented Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce from joining him in the history books
The last team to win back-to-back championships is the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots squad from the early 2000s. The Patriots won the Super Bowl during the 2003 and 2004 season.
Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs could have become the eighth team in NFL history to win two straight Super Bowls. However, Brady and the Buccaneers wouldn’t let it happen.
Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles called one of the best games in NFL history in Super Bowl 55. His defense only allowed the Chiefs to score three field goals and picked off Mahomes two times. Kansas City was held without a touchdown for the first time in the Mahomes era.
Brady is now a seven-time Super Bowl champion and a five-time Super Bowl MVP. He is the greatest quarterback in NFL history and proved in 2020 that he didn’t need Bill Belichick to win a Super Bowl.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were in a down mood after losing Super Bowl 55 in blowout fashion. However, the two stars made sure to give Tom Brady his flowers before walking off the field.
NFL Films caught what Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce said to Tom Brady
Both Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce congratulated Tom Brady on his seventh Super Bowl after the game in Tampa Bay ended. Mahomes called Brady a “legend,” while Kelce admitted he had a feeling the former Patriots superstar would figure out a way to win a title in his first season with the Buccaneers.
Mahomes and Kelce showed great sportsmanship after losing the biggest game of the season. The Chiefs didn’t play well against the Buccaneers on either side of the ball, but that didn’t stop Mahomes and Kelce from displaying proper respect toward Brady.
Kelce caught 10 balls from Mahomes for 133 yards. Meanwhile, Mahomes threw for 270 yards and was picked off twice. The former MVP was also sacked three times.
Brady racked up only 201 yards through the air against the Chiefs, but he threw three touchdowns. It’s incredible how elite Brady still is despite being 43-years-old.
The Chiefs will use this Super Bowl defeat as motivation to get back on top of the football world next season. Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are two of the fiercest competitors in the NFL. They will undoubtedly train harder than ever this offseason after coming up one win short of repeating as champions.
As for Tom Brady, the GOAT could retire if he wanted to. However, the 14-time Pro Bowler is coming back next season and eager to defend his Super Bowl with the rest of his Buccaneers teammates.
Could the Buccaneers and Chiefs meet in Super Bowl 56?
It would be fascinating to watch Tom Brady and the Buccaneers face Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs in Super Bowl 56.
However, history tells us it likely won’t happen.
While Mahomes is a once-in-a-generation quarterback, the Super Bowl’s loser usually struggles in the following campaign. With that being said, all eyes will be on the Chiefs in 2021 to see if the team can break that trend.
