What Happened to Former NBA All-Star Chris Kaman?

Chris Kaman spent 13 seasons playing in the NBA. The seven-foot big man went into the NBA draft as one of the top big men in the class. He went on to have some success during his NBA career.

He had one breakout season that allowed him to make his first and only All-Star appearance. Kaman retired from basketball in 2016. So what has Kaman been up to for the past four years?

Kaman is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and he decided to stay in his home state for college. He attended Central Michigan University. He played three seasons at CMU and led the team to a Mid-American Conference Championship and an NCAA tournament first-round win in 2003. During the 2003 season, he was an honorable mention All-American. After his junior season, he declared for the 2003 NBA draft.

The Los Angeles Clippers selected Kaman with the sixth overall pick in the draft. In his first season with the Clippers, he played in all 82 games and averaged 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds. That season he was the only Clipper to play all 82 games. Kaman became the second rookie in franchise history to play in all 82 games his first season. He finished the season ranked second among all rookies in blocked shots per game with .89 blocks per game. Kaman earned the starting center position on the NBA Rookie All-Star team.

After his rookie season, Kaman improved his game. He saw his numbers increase each season. He averaged a double-double for the first time in his career during the 2007-08 season. That season he averaged 15.7 points and 12.7 rebounds. He made his first and only All-Star team during the 2009-10 season. Kaman averaged a career-high 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds. During Kaman’s time with the Clippers, they were one of the worse teams in the league.

Kaman spent his first eight seasons playing with the Clippers. In December of 2011, he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. During his first season with the Pelicans, the team announced they wanted to trade him because he was one of the oldest players on the team and wanted to give their younger players opportunities. He finished the season playing in 47 games and averaged 13.1 points and 7.7 rebounds.

The next season he signed with the Dallas Mavericks and teamed up with his former Olympic teammate Dirk Nowitzki. Kaman spent one season in Dallas, then played for the Lakers for a year and finished his season playing two years with the Portland Trail Blazers. He finished his career averaging 11.2 points and 7.6 rebounds.

What has Chris Kaman been doing since he’s not playing basketball?

Kaman’s last NBA season was in 2015. Since then, he has not been back to playing basketball. In 2019 put his oceanfront cottage in Carpinteria back on the market. Kaman was living there when he played for the Clippers. It was last said that the cottage was on the market for $3.35 million, and he bought it for $1.8 million in 2010.

In 2018 Kaman was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. As of now, there are no reports on what it is that Kaman is doing. Basketball may be out the picture now for the big man who is now 38 years old. But he can always say that he enjoyed a career in the NBA and played in an All-Star game.
