Kevin Ware is a name that is well-known throughout college basketball. What happened to him in 2013 is something that he and the college basketball will never forget.
During the 2013 NCAA tournament, the University of Louisville matched up against Duke University in an Elite 8 game. Ware, a member of Louisville, went up to block a shot and landed awkwardly on his right leg and ended up breaking his leg. When he fell, the bone from his leg came out of his skin, and it was a severe injury to witness.
Kevin Ware’s career at Louisville
Ware was a highly-rated basketball player coming out of high school. He initially signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Tennessee but changed his mind after Bruce Pearl was fired. Ware then decided to go to Louisville.
During his first season at Louisville, Ware did not see much production on the court. In 20 games, he only averaged 1.0 points per game. He saw more production in his sophomore year at Louisville. He mostly played a backup role, playing behind starting point guard Peyton Siva. Going into the NCAA tournament, Louisville was one of the best teams in the country.
They were one of the favorites to win the title that year, and Ware played a vital role in coming off the bench. When the tournament started, Louisville dominated from the start and looked like the best team in the field.
Kevin Ware’s tragic leg injury
During the Elite 8 game against Duke, Louisville had a 21-17 lead with about six minutes left to play in the first half. Louisville was on defense, and Ware was in the game when he tried to block, and when he landed, it was not a pretty sight. Ware’s knee twisted as he landed and was on the ground in a lot of pain.
The referees had to stop the game so Louisville could tend to Ware. When the Louisville bench saw Ware on the ground and then saw his leg, everyone on the bench could not believe what they were looking at. Ware’s bone was coming out of his leg, and the Louisville staff had to find towels to cover his leg up.
The players on the court were all in shock and disbelief and hoping that he was ok. Ware had to be carried off on a stretcher, and he was in good spirits when he exited the game. That motivated Louisville’s entire team as they were playing for their teammate.

After Ware suffered his injury, he received a lot of support from NBA players and other professional athletes. He would go on to make a full recovery and finished his college basketball career playing at Georgia State University.

The next year he joined Faros Larissas of the Greek Basket League. He averaged 12.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists playing for Faros Larissas.
