What Impressed Kobe Bryant the Most About Colin Kaepernick

Over the last few years, Colin Kaepernick’s message concerning his stance with social injustice has continued to be misinterpreted and misconstrued. That has played a significant part in him being out of the NFL since he decided to opt-out of his deal with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. However, there have been many notable professional athletes who support Kaepernick’s cause to bring attention to the police brutality that the black community continues to face. One of the prominent sports figures that were impressed by his actions was former Los Angeles Lakers star guard Kobe Bryant.

It has been nearly four years since Colin Kaepernick last played a game in the NFL as he has been without a team since the 2016 season.

Kaepernick’s name has once again become a prominent mention around the world of sports after yet another African-American man, George Floyd, lost his life due to the mistreatment from the police. Throughout the process, the 32-year-old’s message has remained the same while he has held a strong desire to return to the league.

However, it has been that brushed aside due to the overwhelming belief that his stance for social change would be a distraction for any team to deal with daily. In that time he has been out of the NFL, Kaepernick has garnered more significant support from his peers across the sports landscape, which included an all-time NBA great in his corner.

As time has continued to move along, Colin Kaepernick’s message and commitment to his cause have stayed firm.

During that span, it also created a great deal of admiration toward him from former Lakers great Kobe Bryant. During an interview in February 2018, he was impressed by Kaepernick’s leadership and his efforts.

“I think what Colin Kaepernick stood for is the epitome of doing what he believes is right. Now, things have been taken out of context and misconstrued and they try to bend it this way and that way, and missing the point in the message he was getting across. I think having the bravery to do that is something that we should all stand for.”

Although Bryant didn’t discuss things of that nature to a great extent throughout his career, he clearly understood what Kaepernick was attempting to do. That saw Bryant put his words to action as he donated $10,000 to Youth Service, Inc. in his hometown of Philadelphia, an organization dedicated to providing shelter and other services to at-risk children and families as part of the 10 for 10 Encore pledge for social reform.

Kaepernick’s message has rung sharply for other black professional athletes, and Bryant was a shining example of the positive impact his efforts continue to have.

With other professional prominent athletes behind Colin Kaepernick, it’s clear that he had growing support behind him.

One would have to believe Bryant would have taken more action, especially during this troubling time, where it became increasingly evident that massive change is needed. Kaepernick’s message has become a focal point in the world of sports, which has seen more NFL players embrace it and push forward for that cause.

There is much more to come with the ongoing protests and stronger push for change in the United States to stop the racial injustices that minorities have to deal with daily.
