Anthony Rizzo is among the most reliable MLB players. Not only was he a key member of the historic Chicago Cubs World Series team, but his presence is felt through all of Major League Baseball. This reputation has paid Rizzo quite a hefty sum of money with a chance of getting much more. Entering his thirties, it’s time to see just how much the star first baseman is worth.
Anthony Rizzo’s career
Rizzo was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2007 when he was just a teenager, but it took several years and a change of scenery before he made his MLB debut. As a member of the San Diego Padres, Rizzo had a solid, albeit unspectacular year for the Padres, and by 2012, he was a member of the Chicago Cubs. There, the promise showed up almost right away.
After two solid seasons with the Cubs, Rizzo’s third year with the club was a coming-out party. He appeared in all 160 games, batting .278 en-route to 32 home runs, 78 RBIs, and a whole lot of base hits to go with it. Rizzo became the team’s first baseman of the future, and he has kept that role in the years since.
If there is one thing that has defined Rizzo’s career in Chicago, it has been consistency. That 32 home run mark has been around his target every year, with the exceptions being the rare times that he missed more than a few games. Rizzo provides bat insurance that does not always go on the score sheet, and his fielding makes him a perennial star.
Rizzo might not be in the Mike Trout or Bryce Harper level of superstar, but he is one of the league’s most reliable players on a night in, night out basis.
How much is Rizzo worth?
Until recently, Rizzo was making a relatively small contract in Major League Baseball. It wasn’t until his 2019 season that he even eclipsed $10 million a year in salary. However, after signing on for the next two seasons, his pay is about to go up exponentially. Rizzo is set to make $16.5 million in each of the next two seasons.
In 2021, he will be in his early thirties. If he can get back to the All-Star form he had three years ago, his best paydays may still be ahead of him, depending on how it goes. Still, his multimillion-dollar contracts have made him a pretty penny over his first decade in the majors. To date, Rizzo has amassed a comfortable $27M net worth.
He knows how to spend his money, too.
How does Rizzo spend his money?
Rizzo married Emily Vakos in late-2017 and spared no expenses in the process. Teammate Kris Bryant, country singer Brett Eldredge, and several other notable guests showed up at the nuptials, which took place in Florida. The couple went all out, with custom cocktails and custom napkins which featured rewritten lyrics to popular songs by Rizzo himself.
Since then, the couple has been active on Instagram, sharing vacation photos, golf pictures, and photos of their lives at home. Rizzo knows how to enjoy his hard-earned money and let his wife enjoy it too. However, the couple doesn’t only spend their money on luxury. They are also quite generous, as well.
Rizzo is a cancer survivor, and as such he has a soft spot for those who are affected by the terrible disease. In November of 2019, he put his money where his mouth was on the subject and donated a million dollars to cancer research through his Anthony Rizzo Foundation. Rizzo has also been there for the community in different ways, too. In 2018, he visited his former high school, Stoneman Douglas, after the tragic school shooting that occurred there.
Rizzo is the proper balance of generous and indulgent. He knows how to enjoy his money while also using it to help the right causes. With several years left in his career, he might still be owed a massive payday, too. Until then, however, he seems to be doing a great job with what he already has.
