Urlacher played his college football at the University of New Mexico. He was converted to linebacker when he joined the team, and he also played on both sides of the ball. New Mexico also used him as a return specialist and wide receiver during his final two years with the team. Despite the team not performing well, Urlacher was one of the most productive players for New Mexico.

He finished his career with 442 tackles, three interceptions, 11 sacks, and 11 forced fumbles. During his time as a wide receiver, he caught six touchdown passes, and he returned five kicks for touchdowns as a kick returner. Urlacher was an overall athlete, and his abilities allowed him to play numerous positions at a high level. After the 1999 season, he was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is awarded to the top defensive back in the country. He also finished 12th in the Heisman Trophy ballot.

Urlacher was named an All-American in 1999. At New Mexico, Urlacher received numerous honors. He finished his career with the third-most career tackles in the school’s history, and he was named the Male Athlete of the Year in 2000. Urlacher was the first person to be inducted into the University of New Mexico’s Football Wall of Fame. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December of 2017.

After having a successful collegiate career, Urlacher went on to do the same in the NFL. Going into the 2000 NFL draft, he was considered one of the most talented prospects. The Bears selected him with the ninth pick in the draft. Urlacher immediately made an impact when he joined the team. During his rookie season, he finished with 125 total tackles, eight sacks, and two interceptions. He was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and was a Pro Bowl selection.

Urlacher continued to dominate the league throughout his career. During the 2002 season, he set a Bears franchise record for most total tackles in a season with 153. Urlacher played a key role on the defensive side and was the spark that they needed. In 2005 he was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Urlacher dealt with some injuries throughout his career, but he continued to play at a high level and remained one of the top defensive players in the league. He finished his career, setting a Bears franchise record with a total of 1,353 tackles throughout his career. Urlacher had a career to remember, and in 2018 he was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In an ESPN article, the group that Urlacher is with, which features Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez, submitted an initial bid of $1.7 billion.

According to a report by the New York Post, Billionaire Steve Cohen has made a top bid so far with $2 billion. According to the New York Post, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon would prefer to sell to the Rodriguez-Lopez group if its offer is close to the best bid by the time the auction ends. So maybe Urlacher will have the opportunity to have ownership of a team. We will have to wait and see.
