So far in the NBA bubble, Dion Waiters has been a nice surprise for the LA Lakers. Waiters has had an interesting NBA career, spending most of it with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. However, he was a top-five NBA draft pick at one point, so he has made a decent amount of money in his career. So, with that in mind, what is his salary, and how much is his net worth?
Dion Waiters went to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA draft
The Cavaliers selected Waiters with the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft out of Syracuse. The Cavs ultimately had hopes that he and Kyrie Irving would become their duo of the future.
Waiters played well in his first two seasons with the Cavaliers. He averaged 14.7 points per game during his rookie season, and a career-high 15.9 points per game in 2013-14. He improved his shooting in 2013-14 too as his field goal percentage increased from 41.2% to 43.3%, and his 3-point shooting went from 31% to 36.8%.
Despite his individual success, the Cavaliers were not very good in Waiters’ first two seasons. They ultimately missed the playoffs in each of those seasons.
However, LeBron James announced that he was returning to the Cavaliers in the summer of 2014. Things didn’t go well for Waiters that next season, though. He only scored 10.5 points per game in 33 games during the 2014-15 season for the Cavaliers. His 3-point shooting percentage was also an atrocious 25.6%.
In January 2016, the Cavaliers traded Waiters to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Cavaliers ultimately acquired Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith in the three-team deal that also included the Knicks.
He starred for the Miami Heat after playing for the Thunder
After getting traded to Oklahoma City, Waiters ultimately played for the Thunder through the 2015-16 season. He was pretty much just a role player, but the Thunder were an excellent team. They reached the Western Conference Finals in 2015-16, before losing to the Golden State Warriors in seven games.
Following his time with the Thunder, Waiters then found success with the Miami Heat. He averaged 15.8 points per game in 2016-17 with the Heat, which helped him earn a four-year, $52 million deal with the team in 2017. Waiters then averaged 14.3 points per game in 30 games for the Heat in 2017-18, and 12 points per game in 44 games in 2018-19.
However, Waiters only played in three games with the Heat in 2019-20. According to Bleacher Report, he received a one-game suspension, and then a 10-game ban for conduct detrimental to the team. The Heat then traded Waiters to the Grizzlies in February, and the Grizzlies waived him days later.
Waiters then signed with the LA Lakers in March. Through his first two games with the Lakers, he is averaging 11.5 points per game.
What is Dion Waiters’ salary, and how much is his net worth?
Waiters has actually made a lot of money from the Heat and Grizzlies this season due to the massive contract he signed in 2017. He made $7.3 million with the Heat, and $4.7 million with the Grizzlies, according to Spotrac. The contract he signed with the Lakers — which lasts for the remainder of the 2019-20 season — is worth $503,656.
Waiters will also be paid in full by the Grizzlies in 2020-21 despite being waived by the team, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The Grizzlies owe him $12.65 million for 2021-21. It is unclear, though, how much of his salary this season and next season are impacted by COVID-19.
Because of the money he has made in the league, Celebrity Net Worth reports that Waiters is worth $2 million.
With how much he is already owed next season, though — and with the possibility of him signing another contract on top of that — maybe his net worth will be even higher soon.
