The Dayton Flyers will find their way back to the NCAA Tournament this year after missing the last two years. Before that, the team made four straight appearances in the tournament.
This year the Flyers can go into the tournament as a No. 1 seed for the first time in school history. The team’s highest seeding in the tournament was No. 4 in the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
The Flyers caught a lot of people’s attention early in the season, and they have dominated since then.
Will this team continue to dominate going into the tournament?
Dayton’s regular season success
Dayton took the Atlantic 10 by storm this year, emerging as the favorites in the conference. The Flyers finished the regular season with an 18-0 conference record.
The Flyers started to gain national recognition early in the season at the Maui Invitational. This team took a highly rated Kansas team to overtime and lost by six points. After that game, people realized this mid-major team was for real.
The only other loss that the Flyers took was an overtime defeat to Colorado 78-76. In his third year as head coach Anthony Grant has turned this team into a powerhouse in college basketball.
In conference play, the Flyers ranked first in offensive scoring at 80.0 per game and second in defensive scoring allowing 64.5 points per game.
The Flyers took home their first regular-season conference title in three years. Dayton is one team you do not want to see come tournament time.
Dayton’s top player, meet Obi Toppin
Redshirt sophomore Obi Toppin is having a breakout season with Dayton and making the case as the best player in college basketball. Toppin is a highlight reel, averaging 20 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Toppin was named to the John R. Wooden Award men’s national ballot. The award recognizes the best player in college basketball.
At 6’9, Toppin is a force inside and can shoot, making him a tough player to guard. He makes his team better on the offensive and defensive side.
His performance this year has drawn interest from NBA teams. With his size and athleticism, Toppin can make a name for himself early in his NBA career.
A shot at winning the national championship
When you talk about teams who can win the NCAA Tournament, you can make a case for Dayton. The last time a Dayton team made it to the national championship game was in 1967 when they lost to UCLA. Since then, no team has made the Elite Eight.
One thing to know about the NCAA Tournament is that anything can happen on any given day. It’s all about who’s playing the best basketball at the time. And Dayton has the talent and the coaching to make a run at the title.
The Flyers will leave everything on the court, and every player who steps out there will give it their all. There’s a reason this team finished the regular season as the No.3 team in the country, and they will show the world what Dayton basketball is.
