With each passing week, it is becoming more apparent that Tom Brady will head into free agency for the first time in his illustrious career. That has put on the table the likelihood that he’s played his final game for the New England Patriots. There are also reports that he will explore his options on the open market diligently before deciding where he plans to do with this next chapter. There is one team that is starting to emerge as potentially the most appealing landing spot for him to continue his Hall of Fame career.
Tom Brady’s free agency plans
Throughout the 2019 season, Brady laid his focus on the task ahead without giving much thought to questions around his future with the Patriots.
There were times during the year that the 42-year-old made some intriguing comments. But, he truly opened the door after early playoff exit against the Tennessee Titans as stated he was unsure of what was to come with his standing with the Patriots.
Meanwhile, head coach Bill Belichick lumped Brady’s upcoming free agency with the rest of players on the roster that were entering a similar situation. Belichick did voice that he does have a great deal of respect for his longtime quarterback, but did go so far as to state the team’s desire to bring him back at least another year.
That has led to reports surfacing that Brady is going to look through the various options that could be in front of him in free agency. If this is the train of thought, then that puts one team squarely in the picture as an interesting landing spot.
Tom Brady heading West?
It’s quite early in the process, but one team has continued to gain headway in the conversation as a potential fit for Brady: the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers are coming off a disappointing step back in 2019 that saw them go from being one of the top teams in the league to falling well out of the playoff picture. Much of that lay with the porous play put forth by former Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers.
That has created some strong loose ends with his future with the franchise as on pace to enter free agency. The chatter has grown to the point that his time with the Charger may be up, which opens up the door for the team to whole-heartedly pursue Brady.
Los Angeles may have had a rough season, but the team has a talented roster on both sides of the ball that could compete for a championship with the right quarterback under center. Brady may not be the player he once was, but the potential to have a star wide receiver in Keenan Allen at his disposal while his arrival could be enough to convince both Melvin Gordon and Hunter Henry to re-sign with the team.
The Chargers also possess a highly talented defense that features Pro Bowlers such as Derwin James, Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, and a resurgent Thomas Davis. These pieces, along with the team playing in a new stadium in 2020, could make this more appealing to Brady to consider in free agency.
What are the Chargers’ chances to land Tom Brady?
The Chargers could easily be on the shortlist of teams looking to land Brady, which includes the likes of the Indianapolis Colts and the soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders.
All of this hinges on Brady realistically giving each of the potential scenarios in free agency an honest look. Among the possible suitors at this point, Los Angeles looks to be the most ready to win team among the bunch.
It may be odd to picture Brady in another uniform aside from the Patriots, but that could see the Chargers be the team where he finishes his illustrious career.
