Why UFC Fans Love Tony Ferguson’s Unorthodox Style

The undefeated UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, might be fighting Tony Ferguson sometime in the near future. No one knows if and when this fight will happen, but it’s the fight that UFC fans have been dreaming of for a long time. This is a great fight for many reasons, one of them being how different the two men are. Here’s why almost every UFC fan loves Tony Ferguson’s style.

What is Tony Ferguson’s style?

It’s hard to describe Ferguson’s fighting style since it’s just so different from everything else in the UFC. That’s pretty much the way that most commentators, such as Joe Rogan, have described his style. Ferguson’s style, just like Ferguson himself, is unpredictable to say the least.

Not only is he unpredictable, but he’s also extremely competent with the weapons that he uses. This means that he isn’t doing crazy stuff just to try surprise people. He’s doing crazy stuff that he’s practiced a thousand times at the gym because he knows they’ll work

Ferguson is a complete fighter, and he can really beat Nurmagomedov in any area of the fight. Ferguson can use his boxing to try to knock him out, he can throw a spinning attack with his elbows or knees, he can use his long arms and legs to try to find a submission, etc. The possibilities are endless when it comes to how Ferguson fights.

Unpredictable vs. predictable

Nurmagomedov on the other hand, is totally predictable. Nurmagomedov is skilled in every area of the game too, but everyone fighting Nurmagomedov knows what he wants to do. It’s no secret, Nurmagomedov is one of the best wrestlers in the UFC, and he wants to wrestle his opponents to the floor. There, he wants to either beat his opponent up with a variety of attacks or he wants to just submit them.

This is why many people think Tony Ferguson has the best chance at beating Nurmagomedov. He’s a totally unpredictable fighter who may start salsa dancing in the middle of the fight to try to confuse his opponent. He’s the type of fighter to try a weird attack once, see that it missed, and then try the same move again right afterward because nobody expects him to double up on it.

And Nurmagomedov knows this. So this fight asks the question, will Nurmagomedov switch things up and do something unpredictable? The last time that a wrestler did something predictable, he got knocked out in 5 seconds flat. That was what happened when Jorge Masvidal predicted that Ben Askren would go for a takedown, and so Masvidal immediately hit Askren with a flying knee, knocking Askren out cold. This could happen to Nurmagomedov.

And that’s why everyone loves Tony Ferguson

There’s nothing wrong with someone like Nurmagomedov who’s the best at one thing. But it’s very fun for fans when they don’t know what to expect from a fighter. Watching Ferguson, whether he’s fighting or not, is just exciting because you don’t know what he’s going to do.

In fact, the last time that the two men were scheduled to fight each other, Ferguson shocked the world in his own way. Days before the fight, he tripped on a wire and injured his knee, forcing him to pull out of the fight. While obviously disappointing for UFC fans, it’s proof that no one knows what to expect from Ferguson, both inside the octagon and outside of it.

Plus, not a lot of people want to watch someone lose. That’s not a problem for Ferguson’s fans, as another reason why they love him is that he keeps winning. He’s not undefeated like Nurmagomedov is, but with a record of 25-3, he’s pretty close.
