Will Demar DeRozan Stay in San Antonio?
DeMar DeRozan is in his second season with the San Antonio Spurs after spending much of his career with the Toronto Raptors.
Now, DeRozan’s future in San Antonio could come to an end during the summer. If that does happen, he will be one of the top players on the market this summer.
If the Spurs and DeRozan don’t agree on a contract extension by June, the four-time all-star plans to decline his $27.7 million player option for next season, making him an unrestricted free agent, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
DeRozan’s career in San Antonio
When the Toronto Raptors traded DeMar DeRozan to the Spurs, not only did it surprise the NBA world, but he was surprised as well. But that didn’t stop him from being the dominant player that he has been over the years.
In his first year with the Spurs, he averaged 21.2 ppg, 6.2 asp, and 6.0 rbg. His average in rebounds and assists were the most ever in his career. The Spurs are no longer the dominant team they were, but DeRozan has not let that slow him down.
This season, through 61 games, he’s averaging 22.0 ppg, 5.6 apg, and 5.6 rpg. He’s also shooting a career-best 52.6 percent from the field. Leading the team in points and assists you have to think that the team wants to keep DeRozan around.
DeRozan is the one player on San Antonio who can turn the team around.
Are the Spurs a good fit for DeRozan?
Head coach Greg Popovich will go down as one of the best coaches in the NBA and he will get inducted into the Hall of Fame when it’s all said in done. Popovich and DeRozan go hand in hand.
Popovich is not big on the long ball and DeRozan’s game is more of a mid-range, inside type of game. With the Spurs being in the West, that does not make things easier. With the stacked teams now, like the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, it’s tough to come out the west.
The Spurs have a young team and need that veteran leadership. DeRozan is one player who the young guys can look up to and depend on. LaMarcus Aldridge is another veteran player on the team that is a key component.
The Spurs were going in a different direction when Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan, and Kawhi Leonard all left. DeRozan is a player who will give his all on the court no matter who he’s playing for.
Who can land DeRozan?
Numerous teams could potentially land DeRozan if he doesn’t sign with the Spurs.
The New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons are teams who expect to have max cap space available this summer. The Knicks have been interested in going after DeRozan, according to Chris Haynes, and could see him as someone who could lead the team back to the playoffs.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out for DeRozan’s future if he doesn’t sign with the Spurs. There’s no doubt that teams will be knocking on his door because they realize the value he still has.
DeRozan could resign with the Spurs but, that doesn’t eliminate the option of joining another team if he doesn’t.
