Most people Coco Gauff’s age are in high school figuring out what college they want to attend. That’s not the case for Gauff. She is a rising tennis star at the age of 16.
Coco Gauff becoming a professional tennis player
Gauff came from an athletic family. Her parents were both NCAA Division I athletes and Gauff played multiple sports growing up. Gauff’s father played basketball at Georgia State University and her mother ran track and field at Florida State University. She wanted to focus on tennis because of the opportunity to compete in an individual sport. Gauff also looked up to Venus and Serena Williams.
The young tennis phenom had success as a junior and earned a sponsorship to train at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy in France. Mouratoglou coached Serena Williams since 2012 so Gauff was in good hands. At 13, Gauff began playing on the ITF Junior Circuit and she finished runner-up at the junior 2017 US Open. She would become the No. 1 junior in the world after winning the junior Grand Slam singles title at the 2018 French Open.
In 2019, she made her WTA debut at the Miami Open and won her opening match. Gauff became the youngest player to qualify for the Wimbledon Championships in 2019. This young tennis player carries herself well on and off the court and she does not play like she’s the youngest out there. In just her short career, Gauff quickly made a name for herself.
Coco Gauff getting big wins in her career
Gauff already has some big wins in her young career. In 2019 at Wimbledon she defeated one of her idols Venus Williams in straight sets. That was a huge win for Gauff and her career really took off after that win. Here you have a player who wasn’t even 18 yet beating one of the top players in the history of tennis.
Gauff also had another big win that year when she defeated Venus Williams for the second time in her career in the 2020 Australian Open. She later went on to defeat defending champion Naomi Osaka. Gauff has a bright future ahead of her and she has the potential to be one of the top players in the world one day. She will only get better and better the older she gets.
