Maxiell is a native of Chicago, Illinois, and he played college basketball at the University of Cincinnati from 2001 to 2005. He had a successful freshman season earning Conference USA Sixth Man award and All-Freshman team honors. As a junior and senior, he was named to the All-Conference USA second, and during his senior year, he led the conference in blocked shots at 2.8 per game, which ranked 18th in the nation. Maxiell was known for his defensive presence on the court. He finished second in school history for career blocked shots with 252.

After his college career, he decided to enter the draft, and the Detroit Pistons selected him with the 26th overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. He spent his first eight NBA seasons playing in Detroit, primarily coming off the bench. During the 2007-08 season, he averaged 7.9 points, which was a career-high. In his final season in Detroit, he became a starter playing in 72 games and starting in 71. That season he averaged 6.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.

He finished his NBA career playing with the Orlando Magic and the Charlotte Bobcats. In 2017, Maxiell signed a contract with the Pistons, which allowed him to retire as a member of the team. He finished his career averaging 5.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
